Sandy Much Worse Than Irene: Record Flooding Predicted As Evacuations Ordered
The NJ Governor has issued mandatory evacuations of NJ coastal towns as forecasters warn superstorm Sandy will bring record flooding as it hits the NJ coast
NJ Coastal towns are under mandatory evacuation orders issued by Governor Chris Cristie as the hybrid superstorm Hurricane Sandy is projected to hit centered on Point Pleasant Beach and bring coastal flooding inland.
The storm is projected to land with in tandem with a near record high tide and a nor’easter cold front blizzard approaching from the west.
FEMA officials are already making preparations in Connecticut as forecasters warn Sandy could be a once in a 100 year storm that has the potential to bring record flooding and damage to the north-east that is much worse than Irene.
Complicating matters is the storm is expect to stall along its path as it approaches the coast and linger for up to 3 days as opposed to the typical hurricanes which run bring most damage during a 12 hour cycle.
The Weather Channel is now reporting live from the Point Pleasant Beach, NJ the next town over from me where models are converging to show the center of Frankenstorm Sandy will make landfall.

Monmouth, Ocean counties expected to be ‘hardest hit,’ state official says
Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for New Jersey on Saturday and ordered mandatory evacuations for Sunday of dozens of towns on barrier islands along the Jersey Shore.
“Don’t underestimate the impact of this storm,’’ Christie said. “We should not assume the predictions will be wrong. The storm will start Sunday night and it may be with us until Tuesday.’’
[...]
Christie later tweeted a list of the 38 barrier island communities from Sandy Hook to Cape May where residents are subject to mandatory evacuations Sunday.
In Ocean County, those are the Long Beach Island communities of Long Beach, Ship Bottom, Surf City, Harvey Cedars, Barnegat Light and Beach Haven; as well as Seaside Heights, Lavallette and Mantoloking. Seaside Park, just south of Seaside Heights, wasn’t on the governor’s list, but Seaside Park police confirmed that borough residents also are mandated to evacuate.

Mary Goepfert, spokeswoman for the state’s OEM, who was not present at the conference, said at 2:43 p.m. that the latest weather data she has seen suggests the hurricane is moving in more northern direction than first believed. She said this would create more of an impact for Monmouth and Ocean counties. “They would be the hardest hit.’’
[...]
Christie said the storm was expected to present worse storm conditions then Hurricane Irene did last year as “Irene came in and went out. This storm is expected to linger for several days. We had more flooding with Irene, but this storm is expected to present some high winds as well.’’
[...]
Fuentes backed up the governor’s prediction about the storm saying “This is going to be a slow-moving storm that will be with us for at least two to three days.” He noted that high tides from a full moon and trees still weighted with leaves are factors that would add strength to the storm.
[...]
Christie said that most of the state would see some form of impact from high winds, heavy rain, flooding and power outages.

Here’s the latest forecast path projected by the National Hurricane Center.
This morning’s warning from the Asbury Park Press that Hurricane Sandy may bring record flooding. Those warnings were contingent upon Sandy taking the path the latest NHC forecast above predicts it will now take.
Already long lines are filling up at local gas stations as north east drivers prepare to evacuate.
NJ residents are not only filling up their cars but their gas cans as massive power outages worse than Irene are being predicted.
Of course this means I am also under mandatory evacuation and my site will most likely be down for a few days that is if my house stay intact.
