The Zombie Apocalypse Misdirection

Since earlier this year the Internet news blogs and web sites have been filled with various perspectives about the coming “zombie apocalypse”. Back in May 2012 we had a number of stories like this one ‘Zombie apocalypse’ in Florida? Miami cannibal attack highlights curse. This one from CNN in June of 2012 made a point of noticing the “zombie apocalypse” trending on the Internet – ‘Zombie apocalypse’ trending as bad news spreads quickly – and maybe there is something to all of the stories that justify the mass hysteria about this topic. In a blog here at The Beacon’s Glare in July we covered many of these stories. If you have not read it, reading firsthand the number of accounts where the same bizarre behavior is being exhibited worldwide causing this zombie hysteria.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has added fuel to this fire with its various publications and blogs regarding preparing for a Zombie Apocalypse. The CDC says their zombie storyline is just that – a storyline. They used this topic to show what they’d want you to do if the world really did suddenly go “Night of the Living Dead” because it is pretty much the same thing they’d want you to do in case of a hurricane or a major pandemic. Nice try CDC but I for one am not buying it. The stories of bizarre flesh-eating events that followed your post tell me that either you know something is happening or that someone intends for it to happen.

A recent article about an “Armageddon Virus” about a feared contagion of massive proportions being prepared for got my attention. This Sars-like virus appears suddenly with a headache, high fever, joint pain, stomach pain and vomiting. As the illness progresses, patients can develop large areas of bruising and uncontrolled bleeding. That sounds remarkably similar to the external appearance of the zombies flooding the airwaves these days and seen in the CDC manual. The speed in which a virus of this sort will spread in our crowded, hyper-connected will should be cause of concern. This doomsday virus will already have begun crossing the globe by air, rail, road and sea before even the best brains in medicine have begun to chisel at its genetic secrets. Before it even has a name, it will have started to cut its lethal swathe through the world’s population. That kind of fear will cause the same panic a “zombie apocalypse” would cause.

However, after reading this next article I’ve come to the conclusion that although there may be a real virus that causes this event the zombie apocalypse promotion in the news may just be a misdirection to get our eyes off a darker more diabolical agenda. On October 31^st the Halo Corp, a security firm, is hosting a training demonstration at the 44-acre Paradise Point Resort Island on a San Diego bay to prep Marines and Law Enforcement for a “zombie invasion”. According to Brad Barker, president of Halo Corp, in the scenario, a VIP and his personal detail are trapped in a village, surrounded by zombies when a bomb explodes. The wounded VIP is wounded and his security team must move through the town while dodging bullets and shooting back at the invading zombies. Some members of the team will be bitten by zombies taken to a field medical facility for decontamination and treatment.

Defense analyst Loren Thompson agreed. “The defining characteristics of zombies are that they’re unpredictable and resilient. That may be a good way to prepare for what the Pentagon calls asymmetric warfare,” Thompson said.  Fighting against a “zombie” horde is a typical asymmetric warfare where the inequality between combatants must be overcome either by ingenuity or brute force.

As I read this story I had to wonder if our law enforcement and military are being prepared to treat citizens as “zombies” in the event of a massive civil unrest. If a society or community is hungry, homeless or sick their appearance may be that of a “zombie”. By desensitizing the first responders to their appearance (and their plight) they will be more likely to act in a lethally aggressive manner to stop the uprising or event. The only way a response of this kind can be perpetrated is to dehumanize a society beforehand. We’ve seen this effort work in Nazi Germany with The Holocaust during World War II. The Rwandan Genocide, and others like it, has proven that atrocities centered upon civil targets by government-organized crusades of dehumanization have flourished during a time of supposed civility in society. The dehumanization of people of color, and foreigners, encouraged the numerous lynchings that took place in the early life of supposedly civilized America.

When people become things they become dispensable and any atrocity can be justified. To get our first responders to act in such a manner, and for society to accept it, we must first dehumanize the victims of such an atrocity. What better way to do that than to burn the possibility of a Zombie Apocalypse into their psyche to be dredged up by fear in the not too distant future.

So, keep an eye on this phenomenon and do not be fooled either way. Zombies, virus or just plain old civil unrest could bring us to the place where our humanity is lost long before humans lives are lost!

The darkness increases so we must leave the LIGHT on!
