‘Petrus Romanus: The Final Pope is Here’

Many years ago,  I recall happening upon a book about St. Malachy and his prophecy of the popes.  Malachy’s cryptic list haunted me, because it had a very definite end.  The final pope in his list was to be a harbinger of not only the end of the papal system, but the end of everything.  Knowing little to nothing about the papal system at that time, I managed to put the creepy prophecy out of my head, until earlier this year when I heard about Petrus Romanus.

 

Cris Putnam and Tom Horn have written an exhaustive book that explores St. Malachy’s prophecy, and what it reveals may change the way you look at the Vatican and the men who inhabit those famous halls.  Within their book Petrus Romanus: The Final Pope is Here, Putnam and Horn unravel the secrets hidden in history, prophecy, and an ancient religious order that may uncover more about our future than our past.

 

Having already given interviews to major media outlets like Coast to Coast am, I was humbled that Cris Putnam (visit his website at logosapologia.org) was gracious enough to take the time to answer a few questions for the Extraordinary Intelligence audience.

 

This is one of the most fascinating topics we’ve covered here on E.I., so without further delay, I bring you 10 Extraordinary Questions With… Cris Putnam.

 

1.  Cris Putnam, I am so pleased you agreed to talk to us here at Extraordinary Intelligence! Let’s start with an introduction.  Tell us a bit about yourself.

 

It is an honor to be invited! Right off the bat, I would like to say that I find my identity and worth in Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice. I take John 15:5 quite literally because, without Him, I am truly nothing. I know the reality of spiritual hopelessness and depravity. I was a product of the 1980s although my affections lied in the rock bands of the 1970s like Led Zeppelin.  I was enamored by the occult worldview associated with that music and lived my life accordingly. God preserved me through some extremely trying times.  My testimony is that God extends grace to anyone who will repent and offer themselves as a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1).

 

I changed directions academically from a music scholarship to computer science until I finally came to the realization that I wanted to pursue God with all of my heart and mind. Accordingly, I have a rather unusual Bachelor of Science degree in multidisciplinary studies: Mathematics and Religion.  I recently earned a Master of Theological Studies from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and a certificate in Christian apologetics from BIOLA University. Currently, I am studying Biblical Greek and Hebrew at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary as well as taking some Biblical theology with Dr. Michael Hesier at MEMRA institute.  I am currently planning to pursue a doctorate at Columbia seminary.  They allow you to design your own program and I am planning a program dealing with prophecy and apologetics (with a paranormal focus) through the lens of a Biblical worldview.

 

2.  How did you meet Tom Horn and what convinced the two of you to write Petrus Romanus?

 

Tom and I developed an internet relationship via email because he often linked to various essays I posted on my website.  Tom issued a letter to Christian leaders concerning the subject of Transhumanism, expressing his concern that time was running out on adding our input to the discussion. I took his call to arms seriously and wrote a paper for my then current Systematic Theology seminary course: The Doctrine of Man: A Critique of Christian Transhumanism.  Tom ended up publishing that in a compilation called Pandemonium’s Engine, a book featuring himself, Chuck Missler, Michael Bennet  (aka Dr. Future) and many other well-known Christian authors.  Of course we both have a strong interest in prophecy and took notice that a 900 year old Catholic prophecy was nearing its end and no one was saying much about it. God really seemed to have His hand upon the initial research because we discovered some astonishing and unexpected facts. We decided to write a book about it together.  Tom is a successful writer with a large following so it was a wonderful opportunity for me to get some exposure as a writer.  I am grateful for the opportunity.

 

3.  Who was St. Malachy and what exactly is the “Prophecy of the Popes”?

 

Malachy O’Morgair was the first Irish saint to be canonized by a pope. He was born in Armagh in 1094 to a noble family and well educated. He was a celebrated church reformer who was the Archbishop of Armagh. Several miracles were attributed to him as well as a vision of the popes.  As the legend goes, in 1139 Malachy experienced what is today considered a famous vision commonly called “The Prophecy of the Popes.” The prophecy is a list of 112 Latin verses (e.g. Cross of Romulus, Insatiable beast) predicting the succession from Pope Celestine II to the final pope, Petrus Romanus. The Abbé Cucherat tells us that St. Malachy gave his manuscript to Innocent II to console him in the midst of his tribulations, and that the document was secreted in the Roman Archives.  According to some, it remained hidden until its discovery in 1556 by a Vatican librarian named Panvinio, it seems to be mentioned in the 1570s but it was not published until 1595. Although there’s a good deal of controversy over the prophecies prior to the date of publication, no one disputes that it was in print by 1595. Accordingly, the fulfillments, post publication, are hard to explain away.  It seems to have a supernatural fingerprint.
