The U.S. has been hit with a particularly aggressive early flu season this year with widespread reports of the illness across the country, hospitalizing 2,257 people and leaving 18 children dead before the end of 2012.
And health officials say the numbers haven’t even peaked yet.
‘I think we’re still accelerating,’ Tom Skinner, a Center for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman, told reporters.
The latest figures from the CDC show 29 states and New York City reporting high levels of flu activity, up from 16 states and New York City just one week prior.

Officials with the CDC have said the South and Southeast sections of the country are getting hit hard.

The CDC boldly asserts that 36,000 people die every year from the flu. Such scare tactics are calculated to increase flu vaccine sales. However, according to the CDC’s own official records documented in National Vital Statistics Reports, only a few hundred people die from influenza (flu) on an average year. And many of these deaths occur in people with preexisting conditions, weakened immune systems, and the elderly. For example, in 2002, 753 people died from the flu. The year before, in 2001, just 257 people died from the flu. (Fifty-nine percent of these deaths occurred in people 75 years or older; 75 percent occurred in people 55 years or older.) To put these numbers in perspective, 3,454 Americans died from malnutrition in 2001 — 13 times greater than the number of flu deaths! Previously, Baxter flu vaccines contaminated with H5N1 (the human form of avian flu) were received by labs in the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovenia. Uh, I got the flu shot back in September and have weathered four of my wife’s bouts with the flu this season without getting the bug myself. She got her shot late, and her immune system isn’t working properly because she’s on medications following surgery earlier this year. I think they’re getting better with the flu shots as the years go by. Not even a sniffle so far for me.

Even people with flu shot can get sick…. really, thats always been. Each year they say oh we missed that one, it was for another one. One might want to look at the preservative in a Flu Shot, we don’t take them. My wife’s a nurse and I’ve little immunity. Vit D in heavy dose will usually avert it, along with common sense of stay away from crowds. I learned that going through chemo and radiation about 3 years ago. If a lot of people will be somewhere, don’t be part of the herd of sheep.
