Hackers Using Java: How To Disable Java From Your Computer

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Hackers are using Java more and more, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As a result, officials are desperately urging computer users to disable Oracle Corp’s Java software immediately.

“We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem,” the Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

“This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered,” the agency said. “To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, disable Java in Web browsers.”

Hackers have become extremely proficient in installing malicious software through Java. Once the hackers install the software, they are able to commit serious crimes including identify theft

Java was once considered a great solution for computers users on-the-go. Oracle promised computer users the ability to run a Java program on any Java-supporting platform. But that never came to fruition. And, even worse, Java became a popular tool for hackers, the government says. “The most recent Java vulnerability affects all versions of Java 7, including the most current version. Unless you absolutely need it, you should disable Java now,” PC Magazine advises.

Oracle has a Web page explaining how to easily disable Java. Below is a simple tutorial from PC Magazine:

1. Disable Java in All Browsers

Oracle recently released a new Java version, Update 10, that includes a one-stop option for disabling Java in all browsers in the Java Control Panel. Open Control Panel and launch the Java applet. If you don’t see it, switch to Classic View (in XP) or small icons (in Vista or Windows 7). Click the Security tab. In previous versions this tab just allowed advanced users to manage Java-related certificates. It now displays a security-level slider and, more important, a single checkbox titled “Enable Java content in the browser.” Un-check this box, click OK, and you’re done.

Disable Java in One Browser
For security’s sake you really should be using the very latest Java version. If you’re not, or if you need to enable Java in some browsers but disable it in others, you can do that too.

Using Chrome? Enter chrome://plugins in the browser’s address bar. Scroll down to Java and click the link to disable it. That was easy, and a bit simpler than Oracle’s recommended steps. The process is similar in Opera, which Oracle’s page doesn’t mention. First, enter about:config in the address bar. Click the Java heading to expand that section, un-check the checkbox, and click the Save button. In Safari, choose Preferences, choose Security, and deselect Enable Java.

The only way to disable Java in Internet Explorer is through the Java Control Panel. Launch it as described above, click the Advanced tab and expand the item titled Default Java for browsers. Un-check the boxes for Microsoft Internet Explorer. You may need to click the item and press spacebar in order to clear the checkmarks.

Firefox users can click the Firefox button at the top and choose Add-ons from the resulting menu. On the Plugins tab, click the Disable button next to “Java™ Platform.” You can also disable Java for all Mozilla family browsers by un-checking the Mozilla family box in the Java control panel.

Stay Updated
When writing this article, I had a hard time viewing the new feature that Oracle added in Update 10. Why? Because I had disabled Java and figured I didn’t need to update it. That was lazy thinking; I’ve reformed. At any time you might find you need Java, perhaps for a Web meeting, or a remote-control tech support session. If you don’t want to let Java update automatically, you can check for updates from the Java Control Panel at any time.

Whichever method you choose, visit the Java test page at http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp to confirm that Java is disabled. Yes, you’ll occasionally run across a website that relies on Java. If necessary, you can temporarily enable Java for those sites. But you may be surprised at how little you miss it.

I have a far brighter idea. STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER, or even better, disable windows from your computer. Microsoft windows is the real virus.

Yes i agree and Firefox is just as bad and has google all over it but we still don’t have linux up to a standard that can be used by your average man, none teck freak

I have windows locked down the best i can but admit we only know half of whats going on under the bonnet in the zillion lines of code microsoft puts out

        • Proserpina

You have no idea what your talking about. Obviously you haven’t used Linux in years.

        • Barlow

Exactly right. Its a myth perpetuated by Microsoft and the gamers that Linux is too hard to use. I submit that Linux Mint is easier and stress free to the average adult whose primary purpose is to use the computer.

A huge percentage of time is wasted just babysitting windows and keeping it running properly.

thanks for helping us. your’e a rare breed. your instructions were easy to follow.

Before I mentioned it, you had no idea it existed.

Have the 12 year old down the street burn it onto a disk for you, reboot the computer with the disk in.

I’ll admit there is some hand holding needed for the average human, and I have provided that for a lot of people in my area. http://omahapc.net/

It just drives me crazy to hear and see people struggle with daily windows problems when there is a solution that 90% have never heard of.

I have an Acer 2006 laptop running Windows XP and my wife has an 2011 HP Pavilion running Windows 7. We both had a lot of problems running IE8 on the laptop and IE9 on the HP. So, we switched to Firefox and that was ok for awhile and then we both started having lots of problems. We then switched to Google Chrome about 3 months back and virtually all of the problems have gone and stayed away. Chrome comparative reviews, place it at No.1 for browsers and that is what my wife and I have found.

Update, don’t uninstall. Don’t be scared off by the government. It’s just a ploy to weaken our scope of communication. If the government communicates something, we can be sure it is full of lies, deception and ulterior motives. We are not paranoid, they really are out to get us and we must fight back, against their constant attack. The stakes are nothing less than the survival of the Republic.

      SIMPLE FIX HERE:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeTplNLZR7o

SECURE AND PASSWORD YOUR USER ACCESS CONTROL

Anything trying to install requires password to do so

      :-)

        Including Modification to your registry.

this is far incorrect, i,m a hacker and when java is enabled it makes it twice as hard to see your files, so why tell people to switch it off, the facts are if your on ,internet doing something, and java is doing something, i as hacker can,t access your files, as java uses most of your memory, as most microsoft user’s ain,t got a clue how to increase their page files, that means i can,t get in your compyter is using all its power, this makes it slow, and for outsider ,using scanner or nmap, it will just pop up and say, occupied, try later, using scanner it say’s this p/c is running at its utmost power, for your sake , keep your java running, java also encryps your files, that means on microsoft, their about five encryptions running,dos/ntfs/fat32/xerox/ac11 codes/and on top of that binary and slipover code from java, and you may have other java’s

      thanks lez makes sense

ALOT of programs require Java to run.. I don’t see why I would disable it. The REAL FIX is using GOOGLE CHROME. Never had a problem, ask someone using IE (Internet Explorer) or FireFox, they’re always complaining.

    • FalkeAuge

Disabling JAVA is a foolish “hint” to users. Like Lez sez reiterated. Rather protect the PC with a decent firewall and antivirus software. Linux is an option as there are various versions available that have nice GUI. I run different machines with different OS on as part of our unit testing for different platforms and Linux has come one hell of a long way in the last few years. Although it may never replace “Windblows” it does offer a viable alternative in many cases.

    • DaveB

The correct term is “Security Cracker”, not “Hacker”.

Two very different terms for two very different occupations.

    • Linuxmaster

Use Linux or a Unix operating system.

Here is my take on all of this ‘hacker’ scare mongering, as insignificant as my opinion is.

I have been on every operating system that Bill Gates ever plagiarised and none of them have been flawless. I have no anti-virus, malware or spyware protection installed not even a firewall. Yet i get very few problems that are not quite readily fixed. I use the internets for all the usual things and don’t even hesitate to give out private information to websites that i have decided to trust.

Sure it probably helps that here in New Zealand what we call broadband mostly includes some copper wire, at least down to the nearest hub anyway. When i do notice an obvious lack of performance i just install some freeware update it then run same and my problems generally go away.

Having said that i will admit that in very occasional circumstances i have had to do a wee bit of brain gymnastics to get full control back but what-the-hey whats a little effort approximately four yearly. It beats worrying myself sick on a daily basis.

It helps that i have almost nothing to lose but, regardless, i’m convinced the hackers can’t be bothered as i my connectivity would only slow them down and they have much bigger fish to fry anyway.

I do get a great deal of humour out of watching the sheeple fret over their widdle bank account details as i know that all banks have insurance and that i only have to cough up about two hours pay if a hacker gets fraudulent on my arse. To date i have lost zero dollars.
