Tyranny Never Comes Without Warning: People Ignore The Writing On The Wall

Do you know where we get the phrase “the writing on the wall?” It comes from the Bible: Daniel, Chapter 5. Whether you accept that the Bible is the Word of God or not, there is still a great deal of wisdom to be had from studying it. It is the singularly greatest piece of historical recording known to man: never has it been shown to be false in the slightest detail. In the Bible, the writing on the wall is a warning to the king of Babylon because he had turned from God — a prophecy of his impending doom – but it could just as easily have been to a people or a nation who had turned away from God.

A nation’s fall can come in many forms. For Israel, it was at the hand of the Babylonians, and later, the Assyrians. If you know who these people are, then you will know that these stories are not ancient history. The ramifications resulting from the wars between Israel, the Babylonians and Assyrians still drive the events of today. Were it not for another lesson in wisdom so elegantly explained by Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes – that men repeat the past because their arrogance causes them to forget the past – more of us might understand this. We might also understand one of the lessons we are supposed to learn from the writing on the wall:

God always sends us warning signs to cause us to turn back before we fall.

I will not get into the Biblical parallels we find in the story of 1930’s – 1940’s Germany, but they are most certainly there. But I will tell you that Hitler should not have come as a surprise to the German people. They were given clear warning signs of what he was and what he intended to do. After all, Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and 1926. How much more clearly can a people be warned than to read the words of a man who is openly telling you what he believes, why and what he plans to do about it? No, Germany was warned, but they chose to ignore the warnings and pursue their own desires instead. Germany was worried more about their wounded national pride and the perceived crimes that were perpetrated against them by the Allies than they were worried about rebuilding a righteous and prosperous nation. So they followed a man who promised them vengeance against their enemies and an easy road back to material prosperity. They chose the path they took, and they had no on to blame for the consequences, not even Hitler.
