Cognitive Dissonance is a term social psychologist use to describe a persons feeling when confronted with information that is contrary to their world view or paradigm. It usually triggers a mental defense system known as flight or fight in which the patient either denies the information completely (flight) or builds arguments to defend (fight) th
eir view of the world.
When one fights the information they have tendency to get very emotional, often angry and will atteck the source of the information. When one uses the flight instinct they will often walk away from the source, refusing to learn anymore for fear that it will shatter their conception of reality.
There are many instances of this kind of behavior in modern day life, soldiers returning from active duty after being told to do things that may disagree with their personal moral standards.
