Edward Bernays- The Father of Mass Manipulation

Edward Bernays was born in 1891 in Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria. He was the nephew of the famous psychoanalysis pioneer Sigmund Freud (see picture above). Edward was born in Austria, but was brought up in New York to be closer to his uncle who was launching his psychiatric practice there. In 1912, Edward graduated from Cornell University with a degree in agriculture, but chose journalism and public relations instead.

Today, very few people outside Public Relations recognize the name Edward Bernays and as we are now over a decade into the 21st century, his name deserves to be listed as one of the most influential figures of the previous century. This would have pleased Bernays considering he always craved fame and a place in American history.

Public Relations was originated and widely used in the 20th century and Bernays- known as the “father of public relations” at the time of his death- played a major role in defining the global philosophy and methods of manipulating the masses. He combined social psychology (which he learned from his Uncle Freud), public opinion, political persuasion and advertising to create “illusions” which were eventually portrayed to the population as “reality.” Bernays was proud of his job and often referred to his job description as the “engineering of consent.” His main objective was to provide government and media outlets with powerful tools for population persuasion and control. Years ago, Americans had toast and coffee for breakfast, but after Bernays took his uncle’s complex ideas on the unconscious, psychological motivations of the human mind and applied them to the new field of PR, the public started eating bacon and eggs for breakfast instead, because Bernays and his PR team convinced them that this was the true all-American breakfast. Today, it is still considered the breakfast of choice in this country.
