REPORT: Man Believed To Be Fugitive Ex-Cop Didn't Escape Burning Cabin
The cabin where alleged cop killer Christopher Dorner was apparently cornered has been ravaged by a huge fire.
A source tells the AP the man believed to be Dorner never emerged from the building, which is in the Big Bear area 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Dorner sparked an international manhunt last week after allegedly killing the daughter of a former LAPD captain and her fiance in addition to one police officer.
In a creepy manifesto, Dorner told the world he was waging war on the LAPD, which fired him back in 2009.
Before the cabin became engulfed in flamed Tuesday, Dorner engaged in a chaotic shootout with authorities. The former LAPD officer allegedly broke into a nearby couple’s home, tied them up, and held them hostage for days, the LA Times reported. One member of the couple escaped and alerted authorities, CBS reported.
The fire started after police began firing tear gas into the cabin, CBS reported. By 5 p.m. local time, fire fighters were on the scene but holding off on putting out the fire until the situation seemed safe.
“We don’t know exactly what started this fire,” a CBS reporter said earlier Tuesday. But he added, “The flames are growing very quickly.”
“Everybody is just standing with their guns drawn as this cabin burns,” the reporter added.
The man holed up in that cabin about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles was most likely Dorner, the LAPD confirmed in a press conference at 3 p.m. local time Tuesday.
Authorities later said that one of the two San Bernandino deputies allegedly hit by Dorner during the shootout died in the hospital.
