Chinese Farmers Admit Selling Poisoned Crops

Farmers in China’s Henan Province admit they avoid eating their own crops because irrigation water supplies have been poisoned by a local paper mill. The solution? Sell the crops to unwitting buyers unaware of the danger.

The stunning story came about as the result of the paper mill taking over local wells and diverting the water to industrial paper production which consumes virtually all the fresh water once used by farmers to grow healthy crops. The current yield is barely recognizable under a layer of paper pulp covering crop shoots.

“We sold all of the harvest to the market” admits one farmer. “We don’t dare to keep any of it for our own consumption.”
