VW is not allowed by the US government to sell high milage cars to US consumers. VW even makes the cars here that get 78 mpg but must ship it overseas. I have added this link that shows a test drive world record with the passat which was 75 mpg US

In the Link did you notice that they only briefly mention the VW POLO which is the one that gets the high mileage and is build but not sold in the U.S.A.
Not a word about that but distracting away from this fact by giving all the details of Passat Golf and Jetta which by the way also get better Mileage in Europe.

Disgusting. Why on earth would a country which needs to resort to fracking, nuclear power and numerous other dirty and dangerous forms of fuel wish to dis allow fuel efficient vehicles? It doesn’t take a genius to work out does it? The people running this world care not a jot for the health, physical, mental or financial of the nations citizens. Their only mission in life seems to be serving their pay and puppet masters.
We do have a 2004 VW Golf TDI that gets us a good 60MPG that is imperial,which is good enough for me. The Passat is a bit heavier and I dont think it gets quiet as high of Mileage.
But both Cars are imported and sold in Canada and I think in the U.S. as well.
The one the author is talking about is the VW POLO that is build in the U.S.A. but not sold there.It gets 78 MPG.
In 2005/2006 you could buy a Diesel turbo Smart in Canada that got you 70 MPG.
It never was introduced into the States despite the Demand.
The Powers to be in the USA and tightened the Screws on the Canadian Government and it of course bowed to the wishes of big shi* brother America and stopped the Import.
I sold my 300ccm Scooter and bought since everyone is hanging onto their 2006Diesel Smart a Gasoline version believing that I would get the EPA mileage of 50/55MPG imperial that MB claims.Well not so it has 3 Cyl. and weighs a mere 1900 Lbs and gets average in the Winter in town 25MPG Imperial.
Gouing to MB they put on a Computrer and say there is nothing wrong with it making excuses of my driving tire pressure not broken in (@9000km) and i take too short of a trip not giving the Motor to warm up. Looking at the European Smart owners that get close to the acclaimed mileage I believe that it is purposely tuned and loaded with antipollution devices that it chokes the Motor.Since the Computer is keyed to the Serial Number of the Car,you can’t even import a different Computer from Europe.
