CBS Los Angeles, March 3, 2013 (Emphasis Added): Authorities say a foul odor that spurred calls to fire departments throughout the city on Sunday is possibly the result of the large release of methane in the Santa Monica Bay. Santa Monica Fire said in a department statement that they believe the strong odor was caused by a naturally occurring methane leak below the ocean floor. “This morning there was a large release of natural ocean floor methane released in the Santa Monica Bay,” the statement said. [...] Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, said the odor was noted inland from the Santa Monica Bay.
KPCC (h/t Anonymous tip), March 3, 2013: Santa Monica fire haz-mat crews detected unusual concentrations of odorless methane gas in the air that they believed to be coming from either a patch of pungent algae or a sulfurous gas-laced methane bubble, said a dispatcher. That may night be the case, however. Sam Atwood, a spokesman for the Air Quality Management District (AQMD), said his agency has not confirmed the Santa Monica Fire Department’s theory.
KTLA, March 4, 2013: Officials say a foul stench in Santa Monica over was probably caused by a large release of methane in the ocean. [...] A Santa Monica fire hazmat team took readings off the coast near San Vicente Blvd., and found methane in the water. [...] Authorities said that recent changes in water temperature may have caused plankton and algae beds to bloom, releasing methane just below the surface. The gas also might have been produced by a geologic event, such as a shift in tectonic plates.

What the heck do the EXPERTS mean that METHANE is odorless? Open your sewer clean out sometime and take a sniff… Methane stinks to high heaven if there is enough of it released…
They used canaries in the coal mine because they were not able to smell it.
Methane is odorless. So is gasoline. You don’t have to be an expert to know this. Methane and gasoline have chemicals added to them so you can smell them. Sulfur is what stinks like rotten eggs. Your farts smell because of sulfur not methane.
Ever taken a dump in an outhouse? It releases Methane and it stinks like its host.
Been near garbage dumps where the Methane gets either release or burnt,it stinks like its host that produces it.Once you can determine what formed the frozen Methane below you might find out what it should smell like.
Since it contains likely hydrogen Sulfide it will smell like rotten eggs.
Although I agree that pure Methane itself is odorless.
Gasoline is a different issue as it is chemically cooked oil,Bunker Oil smells,not like Gasoline.
So really its all semantics ….I can smell Gasoline and so can everyone else.
To get back to the Article yes the Methane release can smell if it contains impurities.
This is not a very good sign. Santa Monica, coincidentally where some of the most expensive real estate in the country resides and is highly populated, will have a significant financial hit if this does strike.

Tectonic plate theory is theory. They have yet to even postulate a mechanism by which the theorized conveyor belt operates.
Tides, water comes in and water goes out. How does water goes against the spin of that which it sits upon? Take away all the water and the earth is all land. The spinning rotation of the land in one direction and how can the water atop that land go against the spin?
