You Will Not Believe Where SETI Found Messages from Intelligent Life: In the Human Genome!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” Da Vinci

The Search ro Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) was originally formed around a web of personal computers circling the globe that downloaded and stored electronic (radio signal) information taken from intergallacic space and sent it along to central servers for processing.

Only recently has SETI looked closer to home… and closer, and closer:

Science is already using genomic DNA sequences to store data more efficiently than with anything else. Also, once fixed, the code is the most durable construct known and might stay unchanged over cosmological timescales.

This makes it an exceptionally reliable storage for an intelligent signature.

If a statistically strong intelligent-like “signal” in the genetic code is found, then a testable consequence of such a signature can be made, and it has.

It’s now been shown that the terrestrial genome code displays a thorough precision-type orderliness matching the criteria science considers an intelligent information-carrying signal.

Simple arrangements of the code reveal an ensemble of arithmetical and ideographical patterns of the same symbolic language as an ‘artificial’ information code.

Accurate and systematic, these underlying patterns appear to be a product of
precision logic and nontrivial computing rather than of stochastic (random) processes

which means, bottom line that they are due to chance is about one in 10 000 000 000 000

(The ‘null hypothesis’ that they are due to chance coupled with presumable
evolutionary pathways is rejected with P-value < 10–13).

” the p-value is the probability of obtaining a result at least as extreme as the one that was actually observed, given that the null hypothesis is true.” wiki

The patterns display readily recognizable hallmarks of artificiality, among which are the

symbol of zero, the privileged decimal syntax and semantical symmetries.
Besides, extraction of the signal involves logically straightforward but
abstract operations, making the patterns essentially irreducible to natural
origin, or written by a programmer.

It has been repeatedly proposed to expand the scope for SETI, and one of the
suggested alternatives to radio is the biological media. Genomic DNA is
already used on Earth to store non-biological information. Though smaller in
capacity, but stronger in noise immunity is the genetic code. The code is a
flexible mapping between codons and amino acids, and this flexibility allows
modifying the code artificially. But once fixed, the code might stay
unchanged over cosmological timescales; in fact, it is the most durable
construct known. Therefore it represents an exceptionally reliable storage
for an intelligent signature, if that conforms to biological and
thermodynamic requirements. As the actual scenario for the origin of
terrestrial life is far from being settled, the proposal that it might have
been seeded intentionally cannot be ruled out. A statistically strong
intelligent-like “signal” in the genetic code is then a testable consequence
of such scenario. Here we show that the terrestrial code displays a thorough
precision-type orderliness matching the criteria to be considered an
informational signal. Simple arrangements of the code reveal an ensemble of
arithmetical and ideographical patterns of the same symbolic language.
Accurate and systematic, these underlying patterns appear as a product of
precision logic and nontrivial computing rather than of stochastic processes
(the null hypothesis that they are due to chance coupled with presumable
evolutionary pathways is rejected with P-value < 10–13). The patterns
display readily recognizable hallmarks of artificiality, among which are the
symbol of zero, the privileged decimal syntax and semantical symmetries.
Besides, extraction of the signal involves logically straightforward but
abstract operations, making the patterns essentially irreducible to natural
origin. Plausible ways of embedding the signal into the code and possible
interpretation of its content are discussed. Overall, while the code is
nearly optimized biologically, its limited capacity is used extremely
efficiently to pass non-biological information.

Highlights
The SETI hypothesis of an intelligent signal in the genetic code is
tested. ► The code is shown to possess an ensemble of same-style
precision-type patterns. ► The patterns are shown to match the criteria of
an intelligent signal.

Fig. 1. The genetic code. (a) Traditional representation of the standard, or universal, code. Codons coding the same amino acid formsynonymic series denoted with opening braces. Number of codons in a series defines its redundancy (degeneracy). Whole codon families consist of one series of redundancy IV. Other families are split. Most split families are halved into two series of redundancy II each, one ending with pyrimidines {T, C} and another with purines {A, G}. Three codons in the standard code are not mapped to any amino acid and are used as Stop in translation. The
Start is usually signified by ATG which codes Met. Closing brace shows the only difference between the euplotid and the standard code. (b) Contracted representation of the euplotid version. Synonymous full-size codons are replaced by a single contracted series with combined third base. FASTA designations are used: R and Y stand for purines and pyrimidines, reespectively, N stands for all four bases and H stands for {T, C, A}. Series are placed vertically for further convenience. The pictogram on the left helps in figures below. Filled elements denote whole families here. Figure options

Editorial: Venter: The implications of our synthetic cell

MAKE a genome – check. Transplant it into an emptied cell to create the world’s first synthetic life form – check. Frenzied media coverage accusing the researchers concerned of “playing God” – check.

Craig Venter and his teams at the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland, and San Diego, California, have shown themselves to be technical wizards by synthesising a genome from code contained on a computer, and using it to start a cell line of the resulting synthetic organism (see “How the synthetic bacterium was made”). If demonstration was needed that there is no such thing as the “mystery of life”, they have provided it in stunning style. The new life form they have made is derived from information, pure and simple.

Other synthetic biology researchers, while impressed by Venter’s technical achievement, are restrained about …

Would this prove alien life? No. Not necessarily. It might, more or less, prove the existence of God. Ironic, eh? Dissect some bugs and animal DNA…see if the same intelligent patterns exist there as well. If so…I say God. Perhaps life in general is not as random as we’d like to assume. If not, then maybe man has been tampered with. But again, could indicate God as much as aliens.

Intelligent life are you kidding me, well not in the USA at all! there is no intelligent life there for sure!

Anyone who seriously believes, or even considers that Earth is the only place in this Universe with physical life-forms is off their rocker. Further, anyone who believes we are just meat & water that just formed randomly on this space rock with no additional meaning to it is wilfully ignorant or brain-damaged. It has now been statistically proven beyond reasonable doubt by scientists that, in fact there IS an Ingelligent Creator behind & within all of ‘this’!

Anyone who can’t accept that 1) there are other life forms out there, probably intelligent ones
      2) there is an intelligent design to life that is self-evident – is just unfathomable to me. I think people who still deny the above 2 facts of life are actually incredibly insecure, fearful people inside who are in denial & probably in all honesty need some kind of help..

Yes to all the above – Of course there’s an ‘intelligence’ at work – stochastic evolution would imply an infinity of universes (and maybe there are!) for all the choices; a natural progression of matter which, in my observation seems one, to be in a ‘state’ of continuous creation and two, getting more and more complex ‘evolving’ from bits of replicating virus-like critters through one-celled, many-celled to where we are now, the complexity of the human and dolphin brain (the figure six billion seems to be a consistent ‘tipping point’ to the next evolutionary phase throughout: number of atoms in the replicating virus, number of molecules, number of cells and now the number of people.. Next?

Well, i think that searching similar DNA codes in animal cells hoping to find the same as we did in human cells to finally be able to say “God exists” is kind of useless if this “code” was implanted into our ancesters cells. Evolution would have displayed it in all or most of existing forms of life on Earth (they were our common ancestors).
Anyway, you should sound less narrow-minded if you’re talking about persons that are (to you), since they’re non-believers and trust in ramdomness. Moreover this opinion isn’t that idiot. However the specie, if it lives alone (or thinks that it lives alone) in the universe, it will obviously thinks “thats not possible, why us?”, but there’s got to be one anyway. So the creation of “gods” in our mind is a unevitable fact, i think.

(Just want to precise that i’m not english, so, sorry for any mistakes i made.)

Why would anybody jump to the conclusion that “Extra Terrestrial” Intelligence had manipulated human DNA? The FAR MORE LIKELY SCENARIO is that a human of Earth manipulated human DNA, as people have proven capable. There’s been lots of history that has suffered loss by dark age, Dwarka the city of Lord Krishna, Atlantis, Gobeklitepe, The Bosnian Pyramid, Cahokia Mounds, Khufu Pyramid as a hydrogen generator, the Baghdad Battery and on and on, history lost as the dominant brutalized humanity into dark ages. So, there’s no telling how old comprehension of genetic science REALLY IS. There’s claim that genetic science was known to a fractious minority since ancient Egypt expressed as the caduceus, what has come to be considered a symbol of medicine with the double helix snakes on a rod. There’s NIL evidence sited that would indicate origin of human genetics on another planet, extra terrestrial. What’s shown by this study could be, that evolution is an intelligent process, or that human DNA was likely manipulated before the 2 bottle neck events that certified all men are related to 1 man who existed about 75,000 years ago and all humanity is related to 1 woman who existed about 200,000 years ago. They don’t mention any difference between Y DNA and Mt DNA detected by this study. They don’t mention comparing this seeming intelligent code to the genetics of other animals to see if only human DNA is so intelligently coded. They left me with the impression that they’re saying human DNA could be used to communicate to Extra Terrestrial beings by sending human DNA through space. It would seem that’s why they were mentioning the durability of human DNA. Yet it also seems they’re presenting this as being a communication to us by some unnamed extra terrestrial intelligence that human DNA was manipulated intelligently. It’s a poorly written article, that is suggestive and sensational and avoids spelling anything out in concrete terms. Were they saying human DNA is a communication to us of ET Intelligence? Or are they saying human DNA can be used to communicate to ET Intelligence? That they left this open to such wide interpretation leaves me with the impression that this is propaganda nonsense. That their study didn’t bother to gather so much information, questions made obvious by their suggestions, like the comparative intelligence of other species DNA, comparison between human DNA of varying haplotypes, comparison between Y DNA and Mt DNA, all of which would either affirm or destroy their hypothesis of intelligent design, further verifies that this study is crap and that it’s being pushed to suit an agenda. Most likely there is Extra Terrestrial life, probably some of it intelligent, likely even some high intelligence life forms, yet this doesn’t prove that. This doesn’t even prove that humanity is the only being on Earth with intelligently coded DNA as might occur naturally by evolution, which isn’t an entirely random process but is based on the choices of intelligent beings where natural selection is practiced by intelligent beings. Even if they went through the steps to prove this intelligence of human genetic code has certainly been manipulated, as they intimate without stating outright, the odds still lay in favor of that manipulation having been performed by THIS WORLDLY beings, NOT other worldly beings… not Extra Terrestrials. All in all, this article and the study it describes, are crap.

I love how people like caribbean critic are so pathetic and jealous of the U.S. just sit back kid and let us take care if interstellar space travel. And if you’re a good little we’ll let you come to.

If I understand it correctly, the patterns aren’t in DNA but in the genetic code. The DNA is the data that describes how to make a living thing and every living thing has different DNA (Genome). The patterns described in this article are in the genetic code, which is like the operating system that translates a genome into a living thing. DNA drifts over time, but the genetic code is the same for all living organisms (on Earth, as far as we know so far), and doesn’t change over time. That makes it a perfect medium for transmission of a signal over vast expanses of distance and time.

Super excited about this and hope we can learn more about the creator(s) by studying it.
