“Nothing can be more beneficial to human health
while increasing the chances of survival of life on Earth, than the change to a vegetarian diet.”

- Albert Einstein

On Vegetarianism

The basis of morality: the recognition that we are all an intrisic part of Nature and all connected in this great cosmic ensemble, is the fundemental notion needed to correctly understand many things in this great life.

And if there is a domain in which this law of Unity is particularly important, it is that of nutrition. Even if we often consider that a meat diet is absolutely normal, there are certain places in the world where it is not a very popular choice. For example, in India, it is estimated that about 30% of the population live their entire lives as vegetarians, and yes … they do live long, and healthy lives : )

Vegetarianism is a common food diet for them, and no one is surprised or worries about the health of someone who does not eat meat there.
When we go to the supermarket, we only see packets of well-envelopped meat. Because of this, we sometimes forget it’s origins. When we follow a meat diet, we do not simply eat “meat” ( a word which has become a concept of it’s own ) but really ….. animals ! I do not mean to be rude, but what we sometimes find odd in “civilised countries” … is not always that casual if you truly stop to think about it : ) And yes, the animal meat that we introduce within our bodies are not simply “steaks” or “hamburgers”, but really, bulls and cows that have had to suffer a great deal before getting into our plates. The name “hamburger” gets it’s origin in the words … ham-burger. And so, we cannot eat a steak as we would eat a cookie, in an unconsequential way. The two are not “products” to the same degree at all.
A man whom I worked with, and who had greatly traveled once told me this story:

“ When I was in India, I lived for quite some time in the simple house of a family that had welcomed me in. There, I followed a course of zither ( a typical Hindu music instrument ) from a very wise and gentle man there, who did not charge me anything for the lessons. Over the course of time, I had become accustomed to the vegetarian diet which was the normal eating habit of the people living there. Once however, I had a random urge for chicken, and asked my host, who on this occasion was my zither teacher, if it was possible at all to find some in the region. He answered me that he knew of a place very close by where chickens were raised for their eggs, and that only very rarely, were actually eaten. He accompanied me to that place, and, once there, simply gave me a machete while saying to me:

“ If you wish to eat this food, you must know what you are doing ! “

He told me this without judging me, to make me think. Surprised, I fully realised what it really meant to eat meat, and renounced it immediatly.”

This is a story that made me think alot. If we truly knew the conditions in which meat comes into our plates, it would simply become unbearable for us to eat – and I suspect that the meat industries know this very well.
To me now, it is impossible to understand why these creatures should endure so much needless violence. Everyday on earth, millions of animals are slaughtered, when studies tell us very clearly : our body can very well live without this food, and it is even often much healthier in doing so.
How can we think that this attitude does not have negatives repercussions on men and on the harmony of the planet ? We do not have the right to decimate the population of these living creatures for our main gustative enjoyment.
Many people claim that meat has a good taste. Having been carnivorous for almost 20 years and a vegeterian since July of 2002, I can honestly say that once your organism is liberated, even if only in part, of all the toxins that meat contains, it becomes unthinkable, even repulsive to even think of eating some again. And this is not an exageration.
Once you have stopped eating meat, it is as if a cleansing happens, and you can then realise how unnecessary it was to even have eaten some in the past. In my case at least, there are no efforts needed to refrain from eating meat. No willpower is necessary. I have naturally turned away from it, and for the greatest of benefits !
When you start to feel all the living energies that your physical body is absorbing trough vegetables, fruits and cereals which have bathed in the light and pure energy of the sun, you start to be filled with such love and gratitude for nutrition, that your meals become a true communion with nature. Vegetarianism really does help spiritual life. You start to feel such freshness, such health and well-being ! I have the feeling of having renewed my link with nature, to merge within it’s harmony, since I have become a vegetarian. Nothing in the world can compare to the feeling of purity that comes from a clean body. Nothing can beat the wonder that I have at mealtimes, quiet and sitting near my window on a beautiful day, and nourishing myself from the living light which is still present within these plants, flowers, cereals and fruits !
What a great thing to feel energetic and vivified after a meal, rather than heavy and somnolent !
I consider my body as a vehicule, and the food that I eat, the fuel that makes it work. Vegetarian food is comparable to a very low cost energy source, which is also very effective, clean and that does not create toxic emanations. It is like driving an electric car, rather than one that runs on gasoline. It is like using electricity, rather than coal and all the slag that it produces. Also, the physical wastes which are produced by someone who leads a pure life (by eating right, thinking right and acting right – in harmony with nature), are odorless. To beleive this however, you must verify it for yourself.
And for all those who are afraid of having less strength, think of my friend who has been a vegetarian since 1977 and who works in construction with the greatest of vitality! It is clear to anyone who would see him at work, that his body-machine is pure and running smoothly because it is not slowed down by food that is very difficult and slow to digest. Think of the lion (carnivorous) which does not have any stamina, and of the gazelle (herbivore) that seems to be able to run and jump without end. Think of horses, asses, mules, oxen, beefs, cows … dromedaries, camels, llamas, alpacas… rhinoceroses … and elephants !!! Are they not strong?
The Laws of the universe are very clear : it is impossible for peace to come on earth, for as long as animals are being massacred. According to the law of cause and effect, of karma, as long as men will spread the blood of innocent animals, there will necessarily be wars between them. We place the burden of their evolutionary progress on ourselves when we take their lives prematurly, and must then pay with our own blood for the loss of all these animal lives. As a great spiritual Teacher once said ; “Human wars are fed by the cruelty which is done to animals.” Since everything is linked, we must respect animals and allow them to evolve by changing our eating habits, and most of all, our conception of what a “normal” eating habit is.
What should be the most normal eating habit in our societies, is food that reinforces the Spirit of the one who eats it. What should be eaten the most, is food that is not put on our plates at the expense of the suffering of animals. What should be applied the most, is what is truly healthy for all.
Ask a vegetarian how he feels since he as adopted that diet and you will see. All spiritual teachings have always precognised such a diet as being absolutely necessary to the spiritual aspirant ( and humanity as a whole eventually ) and here is why :
  • Vegetarianism is in harmony with the laws of the universe.
  • It prevents a great deal of useless suffering to beings that are as sensitive as we are.
  • It liberates collectivity from a heavy karma.
  • It helps in controlling inferior impulsions and tendencies.
  • It frees the soul from the contradictions of eating our animal brothers.
  • It betters the state of the subtle bodies ( etheric – our spiritual energy, astral – our feelings, and mental – our thoughts ) in a beneficial way by purifying them, and transmiting into them the virtues, curative elements and solar energies contained in vegetarian food.
  • It liberates the energy which is usually gobbled up by the stomach when it must digest food that is too heavy.
  • It prevents numerous heart diseases and cancers.
  • It permits the progressive elimination of toxins absorbed when we eat meat. Animals feel an immense amount of fear, incomprehension and hatred towards humans when they are ill-treated, and even more when they are being led to the slaughterhouse. This in turn, poisons their blood and cells and through that, the cells of all those who eat this meat. The result of this is that eating meat, not only influences our health, but also influences our states of mind – it is much harder to get rid of anger, fear and all lower tendencies, when eating meat. The animal cells then present within us, cannot vibrate in a spiritual way.
  • To the contrary, a vegetarian diet greatly helps the fulfillment of feelings of peace, joy, well-being, health, inner strength and in doing so, gives us greater control over our inner states.
  • A vegetarian diet gives us a feeling of unity with nature.
  • For all these reasons, we must take a better look at our nutrition choices and adopt a healthier life style. It is contrary to the law of evolution to maintain ourselves as chained prisoners of a faulty tradition. We must prepare the way for the new Life to come, and nutrition is one of the most important domains to allow these currents to take their place within us. Sooner or later, I am certain that vegetarianism will become the most popular diet in the world, as it is in harmony with the laws of living nature.

May this day come soon :)

Citations of famous vegetarians troughout history :
    Pythagorus :

“For as long as men will massacre animals, they will kill each other. One who sows murder and pain cannot reap joy and love “.

    Mahatma Gandhi :

“I beleive that spiritual progress asks of us to stop killing other living beings for our own bodily needs”.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which it treats it’s animals”.
“To not eat meat is of great help to the elevation of the soul.”

    Albert Einstein :

“Nothing can be more beneficial to human health and increase the chances of survival of life on earth as the change to a vegetarian diet.”.

    Thomas Edison :

“I am vegetarian and anti-alcoolic: that way I can make better use of my brain”.

    Leonardo de Vinci :

“I very early on renounced to meat and a day will come when men such as me will proscribe the killing of animals as they today proscribe the killing of their kind”.

    Darwin :

“Very few men could support for 5 minutes the observation of an animal trying to flee, with a crushed or shredded member”.

“The classification of forms, of organic functions and of diets have showed in a self-evident way that normal nutrition for men is vegetal as it is also for anthropïds and monkeys, that our canines are less developped than theirs, and that we are are not destined to enter in competition with wild beast or carnivorous animals”.

    Romain Rolland:

«Cruelty against animals and the indifference towards their suffering is in my opinion, one of humanity’s heaviest sins. It is the basis of human perversity. If man creates so much suffering, what right as he to complain about his own ?»

    Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov:

“Human wars are fed by the cruelty which is done to animals. One can only harvest what one has sowed.”

    Peter Deunov:

“By consuming vegetarian food, man becomes more purified. Meat contains more toxins. When animals are slaughtered, they experience fear which forms toxins in their organism. The people who eat this meat, assimilate these toxins into their systems and as a result, diseases appear.”

    Marguerite Yourcenar:

«Animals are my friends, and I do not eat my friends.»
