Five year old excluded from kindergarten for not being vaccinated against chicken pox
THE PARENTS of a five-year-old US kindergarten student are appealing after their daughter was officially excluded from classes for not getting vaccinated against chicken pox.
Frankie Elizabeth Staiti has been told she cannot attend classes at PS 36 on Staten Island because she has not received the vaccine which the family say their doctors refuses to administer on medical grounds.
Mother Elizabeth Wagner says the family’s doctor refuses to give any child the varicella vaccine to ward against chicken pox if they live in a home with an infant due to a fear that an adverse reaction would expose a baby to the disease.
Ms Wagner says the chance of the reaction, while low, is not one she is willing to take when it comes to the health of her 14 week-old Devin. She says it’s crazy for school authorities to reject her family’s claim for an exemption on medical grounds.
“The doctor is telling me it could be harmful to the baby. Like I said, even if it’s a small chance, I don’t want to take the chance and give me any other parent that would take a chance with their newborn. I’m not willing to take that chance, ” Ms Wagner told ABC News in the US.
