Illegal Spying In New Zealand

A report last week revealed the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) may have unlawfully spied on 88 people while acting for the Security Intelligence Service (SIS) here in New Zealand.

John Key the Prime minister of New Zealand said the report found systematic problems with the GCSB. The legislation was never fit for purpose, he told reporters in China.

He said it was crucial the public have confidence in the legislation.

A former spy boss says potentially illegal surveillance operations revealed in a top secret report were done under warrant and signed off by the Inspector General of Intelligence.

Bruce Ferguson, a former defence boss who ran the secretive Government Communications Security Bureau between 06 and 10, said the surveillance was done on behalf of the domestic spy agency, the SIS.

The SIS didn’t have the resources or equipment that the GCSB had to intercept communications, Ferguson said.

Now this week they are all back in the spotlight again by refusing to say if Kiwis’ details have been shared overseas.

The spymasters facing questions over the possibled illegal spying on New Zealanders will not say what details were supplied to foreign intelligence partners – as they were in the Kim Dotcom case.

The Government Communications Security Bureau yesterday refused to say whether personal data known as ‘selectors of interest’ about the 88 New Zealanders was passed to foreign intelligence.

Apparently the GCSB is not allowed to spy on New Zealanders because it works with foreign Governments. Papers that have been released from the Kim Dotcom case showed his details and those of fellow New Zealander and co-accused Bram van der Kolk were sent to the Five Eyes network.

The Five Eyes intelligence network is a group led by the United States with New Zealand, Britain, Canada and Australia holding membership.

The Security Intelligence Service doesn’t have that connection with the Five Eyes network, so would they ask the GCSB to do the spying on the people of interest to them?

As a New Zealander I have to say that once again I am not surprised by the report, or the fact that no-one seems to be able to take responsibility for their actions, and are just prepared to keep passing the buck from one agency to another. I live in the hope that one day man kind will be able to stand up and take the consequences for their actions. Ah well a girl is allowed to dream.
