Penn. Man Shoots, Kills Home Invader with AR-15; Police call act ‘justified’
On Friday night a man in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles north of Philadelphia, shot and killed a man who had forced his way into his apartment. The 20-year-old resident, who remains anonymous, was standing outside his apartment talking with his girlfriend when 32-year-old Jasper Brisbon starting walking towards them.
According to a local newspaper, the resident told police that Brisbon was making both him and his girlfriend uncomfortable, as he apparently seemed to be under the influence of some sort of drugs and talking incoherently the entire time. He also stood and stared at them for about three minutes. When the couple decided to move their conversation inside to avoid the awkward man, that’s when things went from uncomfortable to threatening.
At first, thinking the door was locked, the resident knocked on the door, waiting for his mother or brother to open it. As he waited, Brisbon continued to get closer. The resident then turned the doorknob and finding it unlocked proceeded to go inside, only it was at that point that Brisbon forced his way in between the couple and entered the apartment.
The resident then quickly ran to his room to retrieve his AR-15 and confronted Brisbon, telling him to leave. But Brisbon refused and came at the resident, continuing to mumble incoherently the entire time. The resident, fearing for his safety and the safety of those around him, fired one shot at Brisbon, hitting him in the torso. The resident then immediately called 911.
When police arrived they found Brisbon suffering from a single gunshot wound, and immediately transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed to determine whether not drugs were present in Brisbon’s system.
The shooting has unofficially been ruled a justifiable homicide by Cheltenham police, who say that the resident, who’s AR-15 was completely legal, is fully cooperating with authorities. No charges are expected to be filed.
Brisbon was due to appear in court in May on a DUI and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer charges as well as aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person charges.
