Red Sox’s David Ortiz’s Honest Words About Boston Now on Shirts
Designated hitter David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox was nearly fined by the FCC for swearing at his team’s game against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, but it was in the name of unity and strength.
Ahead of the game, which was Boston’s first since the tragic bombings last week, Ortiz said, “This jersey that we were today, it doesn’t say Red Sox. It says Boston. We want to thank you, Mayor Menino, Gov. Patrick, the whole police department, for the great job that they did his past week. This is our f*cking city, and nobody [is] going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong!”
Ortiz, who is known as ‘Big Papi’ risked an FCC fine, but he spoke from the heart and it was clear the crown appreciated what he had to say.
Less than 24 hours after Ortiz’s speech, T-shirts with “This is our f*cking city,” were being sold, with all proceeds going to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. By Monday morning, the sellers, Barstool Sports Boston, announced the shirts, along with those reading, “Boston Strong” and “Massachusetts Invented America,” had raised more than $25,000.
As for the FCC, Ortiz was pardoned, with the FCC Twitter account saying, “I stand with Big Papi and the people of Boston.”
