The Secret Service is reporting that a second suspicious package has been intercepted in as many days. This time the Mail/Package was meant for President Obama. The first package was meant to be delivered to Senator Wicker (R-MS). The packages were intercepted at an off site location that services all packages that are meant to be delivered to the White House and Capitol Hill. The envelope sent to Senator Wicker was reported to contain “ricin” which is a known deadly substance.

The Secret Service comments on the suspicious package

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the letter to Obama was intercepted Tuesday, the same day congressional officials alerted the public to the letter sent to Wicker. Secret Service is working with the FBI, as well as U.S. Capitol Police, on the investigation, Donovan said.

Sadly this isn’t the first time suspicious packages have been sent to Capitol Hill. In the years following 9/11 we saw both anthrax and ricin scares in 2001 and 2003 respectively. With the United States on end following the terrorist attacks in Boston everything is being treated as a threat currently and extra security is in place.

Word of the suspicious letters comes amid already heightened tensions in Washington and across the country since the deadly bombings on Monday at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured more than 170. Law enforcement officials haven’t said whether they believe the letters are related in any way to the Boston bombings.

Update on suspicious the suspicious package.

An all clear has been given in the Senate Buildings. Reports early claimed their was a suspicious package in the atrium of the Hart Senate Building and that bomb teams were dispatched to take care of any potential issues. Currently it seems that the concern over the suspicious package was thankfully baseless.
