You have to wonder if we really need the zipper these days. We have button-fly pants, and velcro also exists. So do we really need the zipper?

I’m pretty certain that the 17,616 men who went to the emergency room for zipper-related penis injuries between 2002 and 2010, would say NO to the above question.

The zipper became common usage in the 1920′s and in 1937 a zipper company memo held, “Retailers were made to worry that they could be held legally liable if a man injured himself with the newfangled machine on his trouser fly.”

I guess we all know a guy could get his penis caught in the zipper, and a lot of people just think it’s a myth.

The University of California, San Francisco team said “The penis was almost always the only genital organ involved.” The roughly 2,000 injuries per year represent about one-fifth of annual penile injuries and amongst adults, zips were the most frequent cause of penile injuries.

The authors of the paper published in urology journal BJU International concluded that the problem affects both adults and children and that “practioners should be familiar with various zip-detachment strategies for these populations.”

Before you put it away guys, make sure you position it properly so it is away from the zipper. I cringed in sympathy when I read about this.
