It’s just for the peeps that don’t know how to type, you know, the “hunt and peck” method? They were the ones who skipped typing class in middle school b/c they thought they would never need typing skills in the real world! How wrong were they???
I thank my middle school teacher for not kicking me out of typing class especially since I really deserved to be. In eighth grade, it’s cool to see how stupid you can be for your friend sitting next to you so I tried to one-up his broken carriage of last week and empty my spent and now flavorless snuff (Skoal) in the basket where the type bars rest of my typewriter because slamming the carriage as hard as we could (and then acting like we didn’t know where the noise came from when the teacher looked our way) wasn’t funny enough anymore. (poor Mrs. W. So nice and un-confrontational)
I know that it must have registered in my 13 year old mind that the next person to use this typewriter was going to discover the unpleasantness that was somehow appearing on their nice, white paper and say something to Mrs. W. and that it would be a cinch to trace the tobacco mess back to me but my hormone marinated, male, restless, pier-pressured, psyche wasn’t about to care much about that; it would be “uncool”.
So I wasn’t very surprised when 2 periods later my name came over the PA for the whole school to hear, in fact, I knew my friend Bill K. was listening and snickering with me. How special I felt as I was allowed to leave my boring class and go down to the office! (I decided to grab a quick smoke in the boys room on the way) Lucky me… They turned me over to Mr. S. who was my guidance Councillor anyway. It seems my timing was perfect. Mr S. (the principal, known for handing out harsh sentences) was off school property.
My punishment was rather light, 2 days detention after school which got me out of football practice which I hated anyway. What a punk I was.
