16-Year-Old Girl Arrested and Charged With a Felony For Science Project Mistake
A Florida teen with an exemplary record is facing federal charges after conducting what a classmate calls “a science project gone bad.”
16-year-old Kiera Wilmot is accused of mixing housing chemicals in a small water bottle at Bartow High School, causing the cap to fly off and produce a bit of smoke. The experiment was conducted outdoors, no property was damaged, and no one was injured.
Not long after Wilmot’s experiment, authorities arrested her and charged her with “possession/discharge of a weapon on school property and discharging a destructive device,” according to WTSP-TV. The school district proceeded to expel Wilmot for handling the “dangerous weapon,” also known as a water bottle. She will have to complete her high school education through an expulsion program.

Like they say, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.” Seems to me, that the same standards should be applied (I mean if we’re all going to climb the crazy tree) to the school faculty as well as the student. Are the school faculty not complicit in this young girls crime? Looks to me like there is a case for at least child endangerment. Who allowed her to access the chemicals assuming she got them from the school as the “crime” occurred on school grounds? Where were the teachers that were supposed to be supervising & monitoring the students? What kind of leadership is there in that school that basically overlooked a student making and then successfully detonating an explosive device on school grounds? Does the school not have any procedures in place to safeguard their students? How could the school also be so irresponsible as to leave dangerous “bomb” making chemicals unsecured. Yes, some arrests are in order, starting with the school principal and all other faculty members, through shear negligence allowed this to happen. I mean fair is fair. Since they chose to go down this road it only seems right if they all go down together. Or, maybe faced with some of the blame themselves they may well choose to handle things a little differently. Like take a more constructive approach and just told the girl not to do that anymore. Someone could get their eye put out. Then leave it at that.
This is the best way, get the girl in touch with a lawyer that will take the case on pro bono. one letter to the school should be enough to have her reinstated and all charges dropped.
