Scientists Confirm Gobekli Tepe Was Buried On Purpose in Ancient Times

Located in Southeastern Turkey is one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made. Gobekli Tepe is the name of the site and it is the oldest place of worship ever found. The site dates back to more than 11,500 years ago and has turned the historical record upside down. Archaeologists never thought our hunter gatherer ancestors were capable of building such a complex monument during this time period and exactly how the building was put up and organized is a question that troubles the historical record. But this is not the only question that troubles archaeologists with the Gobekli Tepe site, there is also the problem of why the site was abandoned and then buried many thousands of years ago.

Scientists and researchers have put up many possible explanations of why Gobekli Tepe was abandoned and then completely buried and these range from everything to protection of the monument, to new beliefs systems replacing the old and burying the site was necessary to purge the old beliefs.

My theory on why the site was abandoned and buried involves one of two options and both have the religion or belief systems collapsing at the site. Below are the two options I believe could be the reason why the site was eventually buried:

1. Invaders from other lands began to move into the Gobekli Tepe area which brought in many new beliefs systems. Eventually the people moving into the area outnumbered or out-smarted the original residents and the new belief systems starting taking over. Once these new belief systems took over, it was decided to bury the old system which might have been considered evil or cursed and therefore Gobekli Tepe was buried.

2. So far, what has been uncovered at Gobekli Tepe shows many carved animal figures and very few human forms. During the time that the site was occupied and constructed, the Earth was in the last ice age period and the site might have been an Eden for both animals and humans. Sometime around 7000 BC, the site was abandoned which would correspond to the time period that the ice age was ending and flooding began occurring across the world. While we know that Gobekli Tepe was never underwater, the people of the area could have seen the nearby areas getting flooded and hoping to protect the site, decided to bury it. Another possibility is that the area suffered major flooding or other natural disasters and the people decided that the site was now cursed and burying it would hopefully end the turmoil. Some people even think that the monuments at the site represent a pictorial version of the Noah’s Ark Story but written many thousands of years before it found its way in the bible.

So, why did the Gobekli Tepe site get buried and abandoned in ancient times? We may never know the right answer but one thing we do know for certain is that our ancient ancestors were way smarter than we ever thought. The Gobekli Tepe site is rewriting our understanding of history and we could very well find out that our ancient ancestors had developed civilization thousands of years before we ever thought possible.
