The Truth Behind The News

An anonymous official says that security breaches focused on media corporations have come from the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA).

More cyberattacks are expected to originate from Iran.

Energy corporations are the latest target because they are part of our national infrastructure. It is assumed that these hackers mean to take control over digital networks that manage oil and gas pipelines.

According to the US government, this is a state-controlled hack perpetrated by the Iranian government.

The source said: “Although Iran has been repeatedly the target of state-sponsored cyberattacks, attempting to target Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities, power grids, oil terminals and other industrial sectors, Iran has not ever retaliated against those illegal cyberattacks. In the lack of international legal instruments to address cyberwarfare, Iran has been at the forefront of calling for creating such instruments. We categorically reject these baseless allegations used only to divert attentions.”

The intent of these hackers is to cause catastrophic damage to US corporations and the environment.

The public, the source warned, should be told of this threat because it “representative of stepped-up cyber activity by the Iranian regime. The more they do this, the more our concerns grow. That they have done so far has certainly been noticed, and they should be cautious.”

Last year, former US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that there would be a “cyber Pearl Harbor” is the US did not secure their control systems defenses.

House Representatives Ed Markey and Henry Waxman implored Capitol Hill to pay attention because the electrical grid is being attacked by hackers while only having the bare minimum of security standards.

Markey said : “National security experts say that cyberattacks on America’s electric grid top the target list for terrorists and rogue states, yet we remain highly vulnerable to attacks. We need to push electric utilities to enlist all of the measures they can now, and push for stronger standards in Congress that will keep our economy and our country safe from cyber warfare.”

Officials have turned their attention to Iran and all but abandoning the reports that China is the biggest cyberthreat to the US. Whereas China was identified as syphoning data to be sold on the global market, Iran is suspected of having complete destructive motives.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated earlier this month that there was reason to believe that the Middle East was the origination of these cyberattacks.

Ken Silva, senior vice president of cybersecurity at ManTech International (MTI) said : “Nation-state attackers in China, Iran, Russia and South American countries are becoming more brazen and their attacks more complex, involving elaborate plans to steal intellectual property and money.”

Alireza Miryousefi, head of the press department for the Iranian government’s mission to the UN said emphatically that “although Iran has been repeatedly the target of state-sponsored cyberattacks, attempting to target Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities, power grids, oil terminals and other industrial sectors, Iran has not ever retaliated against those illegal cyberattacks. We categorically reject these baseless allegations used only to divert attentions.”

While Iran is being blamed in advance of an all-out attack on the energy grid within the US, Chinese hackers have successfully syphoned weapons designs to ballistic missiles and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets – just to name a few.

The Defense Science Board (DSB) released a report that showed the Department of Defense (DoD) is convinced that China is interested in the scientific and technical information on US defense systems.

In concert, Verizon released documents showing that 96% of the 2012 cyber-espionage attacks were Chinese; and state sponsored.

Even the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) claimed that they were attacked by Chinese hackers who took information from their databases and mysteriously left – without a trace.

In Australia, Chinese hackers have apparently stolen blueprints from the intelligence headquarters, as stated by Bob Carr, foreign minister. This revelation was corroborated with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) who claims that the information was directed on gain knowledge about security and communications systems.

Considering the relationship between the US and Australian military, it is assumed that China is getting to know their enemy’s capabilities.

Breaches for information on US defense contractors such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are especially disturbing to the US government because there is the potential that an overseas US military installation could be activated remotely with the intention of firing on US targets.
