Proof That Your Webcam Is Spying On You!

When ‘smart’ televisions first came onto the market a few years ago, I along with many others questioned the true purpose of this technology and the privacy implications that came with it. After spending the last 7 years researching the global conspiracy and watching the surveillance state being rolled out by the day, it didn’t take a lot of imagination to work out why our controllers might want to put cameras and microphones into each of our living rooms.

The increase in personal and home devices which have both camera and microphone technology, as well as the ability to connect to the wireless Internet, is effectively forming the ultimate surveillance network. This has long been a dream of those that are controlling us, the ability to monitor us at all times of the day, to analyze our behavior using advanced facial and voice recognition software, and to fine-tune our social programming based on the collective data that they gather. It would also allow them to track “enemies of the state” (anyone that poses a challenge to their control), and to monitor their movements and communications.

These may sound like irrational or paranoid concerns to those who have not investigated the more sinister elements of the global agenda, and although the technology is clearly in place, some will find it hard to believe that these devices are being accessed without our knowledge.

Deep down I have always known that this was the true purpose behind the technology, I have just never been able to prove it… until now!

My evidence came during a recent visit to a close friend. During the course of the evening, amongst conversation and generally catching up, my friend was streaming some music from his laptop that was left unattended in the living room. Towards the end of the evening, after noticing that the music had stopped, my friend went into the living room to investigate. After hearing him mumbling some profanities and apparently struggling to resume the music, I went into the living room to see if I could help. What I saw on his laptop screen was not at all what I was expecting.

I have included screen shots below that I managed to take at the time.

The message displayed on his screen appeared to be from the ‘United Kingdom Police Central e-crime Unit’. The message was notifying my friend that his PC had been blocked due to “violation of copyright related material” and was requesting payment by way of a fine for £100. The most disturbing part of the massage was the image included in the top right hand corner of the screen; it was a photograph that had been taken by the webcam on the laptop, while none of us were anywhere near it.

I am fairly sure that this was a fraudulent message that did not originate from the United Kingdom Police, but none-the-less, this proves that third party groups are accessing people’s webcams without their knowledge and capturing images. If they are able to capture still images from the device, then they are almost certainly able to capture video footage and audio recordings from the devices too.

It is no secret that the state wishes to place us all under ever-increasing levels of surveillance; they merely convince the masses that it is necessary for our own safety. The truth is; the only people we need to be protected from are our own governments, and that if we allow our liberties to be taken away in the name of security, then very soon we will end up with neither.

Obviouslywe’re under constant surveillance, a camera on every phone, a camera in every home. Wake up People.” – Bobby Ray

I’ve heard about this hack, and it is just indeed that- a 3rd party intrusion. Although it may not be the government in THIS case- the door is wide open for abuse

      • Decode the World

Don’t worry, to the folks who created stuxnet, this kind of hack is something they do before breakfast.

That’s one reason I still use desktops. This is one thing I worry about when the time comes to buy a new TV. Most likely it will come with a camera and mic in it and won’t function if you cover the camera or gouge out the mic.

A small piece of aluminum foil has been hanging oover the top of my laptop, covering the webcam, for years.

Likewise small pieces of black electrical tape have covered the smartphone cameras, until I want to take pictures.

Still no good way to simply nullify the microphones. Ideas?

      • theblackmosiac

I use the black electrical tape method on my laptop and smart phone too, but I have yet to come up with an effective way of completely nullifying the microphones on them.

If you know exactly where the microphones are located, then placing some tape over this area would likely muffle the sound to some degree, but how effective that would be I am not too sure.
Also not so practical for a smartphone seeing as the microphone is in use so often.

I would be interested to hear any other suggestions?

The only way I know of to completely disable the snooping capability of a smart phone is to remove the battery. Turning if ‘off’ doesn’t work since the phone is *always on*, even when ‘off’. Stopping to remove the battery is a pain and hard to remember to do spontaneously when in a delicate conversation. Wish there was a better way to disable the microphone(s).

At least with the laptop when the machine is ‘off’, it’s off.

Gee my webcam does not spy on me,it is unplugged until I need it.No power no spy.Oh it is a usb cam,my old laptop didnt come with a camera or a mic,so it is pretty blase, except it is a dual core, from many years ago.It fits my needs almost perfect, well it was perfect for the era then, but the technology has come a long way since then.

    • DRAUGR

That’s why there is a piece of electrical tape over the camera on my laptop. It has been there since I first got the laptop and will be there until the day it craps out.

If you still watch tell lie vision your an idiot. check out the patents for digital communication. It is a send and receive device. 4 leds green blue red and clear. The clear records you.

Of course, your webcam can be exploited by a backdoor Trojan. But the question is, how did it get there? And unless your friend is using XP, I would be willing to bet that he either downloaded some program or media from a dodgy Web site, or clicked the red “X” button in a rogue pop-up ad that contained Java or Flash content.

Have your friend scan his system for viruses, and then consider switching to Firefox, Chrome, or Safari and enabling plugin click-to-play. While the authorities can most certainly find a reason to get a subpoena with your ISP or e-mail provider to check your activities when you’re under suspicion, I am not aware of a “big brother” backdoor that allows someone to remotely access your computer straight out of the box. They have to find a way to infect your computer first. And modern operating systems are extremely difficult to infiltrate without user intervention.

      • santuccie

I see your friend is using Windows 7 x86. Not quite as secure as x64, but it still has ASLR and other mitigative technologies. BTW, if you’re not able to fully remove the infection with scanners, then you might just go ahead and do a system recovery. Then, be sure to look into plugin click-to-play and Web of Trust (WoT). WoT will keep him from visiting known hostile Web sites, and enabling plugin click-to-play will foil the insidious malware inside rogue pop-up ads as long as he closes then, rather than clicking to run the content. Between these two, average users can stay 100% malware-free.

I notice they have Avira antivirus loaded. Had to laugh at that. I found Avira to be essentially useless.

A better combo is AVG with Comodo. Also, cover your web camera.

There is no body known as ‘The United Kingdom Police’. There is the Metropolitan Police, Scotland Yard, Serious Organised Crime Agency, and others. All of them will have a Crown logo, indicating their fealty to the Crown. Put a little bit of duct tape over the camera on your laptop, and donate your television to the local old people’s home, or children’s home, or hospice.

    • Geeper

Yeah, this is a scam. The clue is in “requesting payment by way of a fine for £100″. There’s a different view of the same virus for every country: http://guides.yoosecurity.com/moneypak-ukash-and-paysafecard-virus/

+1 to putting tape over your camera if you never use it.

    • truthzilla

I understand the impetus to worry about what your phone or laptop is betraying to prying eyes but… You should be fine if you aren’t a terrorist or criminal. There are about 120 million laptops and probably 250 million phones in the US. It is impossible to examine that level of data. Most often the algorithms controlling the monitoring devices are buzz word sensitive, then they probably cross reference list of known people of interest which most likely is considerable since it spans the world… Essentially, it is diabolical ne’er do wells looking to milk a buck out of somebody.

      • theblackmosiac

Hi truthzilla, I have to agree with everything you say, other than “You should be fine if you aren’t a terrorist or criminal”. If we lived in a world that was run fairly and by ethical and moral governments, then I would be inclined to agree, but history and current events tell a different story. I wonder how this technology would have been used in Nazi Germany if it had been around? To assume that our governments only have our best interests at heart and would never use this technology for nefarious ends, is in my opinion unwise.

I know for a fact a few times on mainly shopping sites a picture has been taken as I have clicked on an item, not many times. Enough tho I put a small circle of paper on the camera then taped over it. I don’t use it much and it is easily usable and not damaged. Taping the camera directly would not be good :D

I read it was to collect consumer reactions for future products to offer. They also have tiny tiny tracking dots on many items inside the labels or other places that track where you take the item. For a fact I saw it explained on a bottle on nail polish, the tracking dot was under tag on bottom so small you did not notice it and it could tell what ever it is hooked into where you take it, if it sits around in same place or does the person carry it all the times. In bags, purses, cars and so on. The more popular the item they more the make of the same thing.

Fun stuff eh? Gotta love the fact that nail polish is so important to the whole scheme of life that we NEED to know if people like it enough to carry it around….. I am sure it is on much of the make up items due to the fact that some really do carry lots or little of it around. I do tote chap stick around when in need but that is about it. I must be a boring customer

My niece got this virus and it locked out access at reboot. This virus had Australian Federal Police etc.We booted windows from the dvd drive then ran repair and this did the trick.Nothing to do with government spying on you ,just a virus scam hoping you will feel guilty or worried about something you may have downloaded.Dont Pay

    • Mariano

Do like me, I have a small piece of paper on the camera, that´s all.

My brother in law wrote “Paranoid” on it. I added to it “Sanely”.
