Ever since I was a kid, I have heard Americans ask, “How could the German people have allowed the Nazi regime to commit its evil acts?”

Well, here’s the answer to that question: The German people had the same warped and distorted concept of patriotism that American statists have today.

The overwhelming majority of German citizens believed that it was their moral duty to come to the unconditional support of their government in time of crisis, especially when the nation went to war. The good citizen didn’t question whether his government was right or wrong. The good citizen placed his trust in the judgment and decisions of his government officials, especially during crisis and war.

That’s what patriotism meant to the German people during the 1930s and 1940s. The good citizen — the one who deferred to authority — was considered the patriot.

What about German citizens who refused to defer to authority, those who had an independent mindset — those who would examine government policies with a critical eye — those who would question, challenge, and object to wrongful government policies? They were considered bad citizens — traitors.

The best example of this phenomenon involves the story of the White Rose, an organization composed predominantly of German college students. If you haven’t seen the movie Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, I highly recommend it. Sophie Scholl, along with her brother Hans, were members of the White Rose.

If you do see the movie, pay particular attention to the trial scene in which the presiding judge, Roland Freisler, comes down hard on the defendants Hans and Sophie Scholl. You’ll notice something apropos to today: Freisler’s mindset is the same as that of American statists today who are condemning Edward Snowden. In Freisler’s mind, the Scholl siblings were bad Germans. They were traitors. Their parents had raised them to be despicable creatures.

What had the Scholl siblings done? What was their “crime”? They had taken a critical look at their own government in the midst of World War II. They had concluded that their own government was in the wrong — that it was engaged in wrongful conduct. Knowing that they were risking their lives or liberty, they violated the law by secretly publishing and distributing a set of pamphlets called “The White Rose,” in which they exhorted the German people to rise up, stop the wrongdoing, and set Germany on a correct path.

They were caught, primarily owing to the Nazi regime’s extensive surveillance system over the German people. A college janitor saw them tossing White Rose pamphlets into the school courtyard and, being the good, little citizen he was, locked the doors and called the Gestapo. Hitler and his cohorts considered him a patriot.

Not surprisingly, Hans and Sophie Scholl were quickly convicted and executed at the guillotine for treason. After all, the law is the law and citizens are expected to obey the law, as American statists never cease to remind us in the case of Edward Snowden.

By the way, I would be remiss if I failed to mention that the Scholl trial did not take place in the regular German courts. After the terrorist attack on the Reichstag, and after some of the accused in that terrorism case had been acquitted, Hitler established a special tribunal called “The People’s Court” to try terrorism cases and treason cases. Its purpose? To ensure that no more accused terrorists and traitors got acquitted.

Another interesting World War II movie is Downfall, which is about Hitler’s last days in his Berlin bunker. The movie revolves around his young secretary Traudl Junge. At the end of the movie, the real Traudl Junge is shown making a statement. She points out that when she accepted the job as Hitler’s secretary, the last thing on her mind was that she was doing anything wrong.

After all, Junge embraced the same concept of patriotism that most other Germans embraced — the same type that American statists today embrace. Her job, as a good German citizen, was to come to the support of her government, especially during crises and war.

But Junge pointed out in Downfall that when she learned about the Scholl siblings after the war, she realized that she should have been asking the same types of questions that Hans and Sophie Scholl had asked. When she learned about Hans and Sophie Scholl, her concept of patriotism changed.

Today, American statists are condemning Edward Snowden for breaking the law and violating his oath as a government subcontractor to keep secret from the American people the massive surveillance scheme that the national-security state has secretly imposed on Americans and on much of the rest of the world. Statists are saying that Snowden is a bad citizen and a bad person. They’re calling him a traitor. They saying that he needs to be put on trial, perhaps even before the national-security state’s special tribunal system at Guantanamo Bay.

Where does conscience play into the American statist’s concept of patriotism and treason? For the statist, conscience must be subordinated to the needs of the national-security state. All that matters to the statist is the undying loyalty that national-security state employees, contractors, and subcontractors (and American citizens) owe to the national-security state apparatus and to their oath to protect its secrets.

For the statist, the national-security state is everything. It is god. It is daddy. It is big brother. Everything else, including conscience, must be subordinated to “national security” and to the national-security state’s oaths, laws, rules, and regulations.

The battle lines are forming in the case of Edward Snowden.

On the one side are the statists, for whom patriotism means an unconditional pledge of allegiance to the national-security state and its deep and dark nefarious secrets involving grave infringements on liberty and privacy.

On the other side are the libertarians and a few liberals and conservatives, for whom conscience and freedom reign supreme.

Time will tell which side wins out. Time will tell which direction America heads in.

The hollow cost myth is dying on the vine… despite your best efforts… no one is out to get the Jews… the ADL is a corporation and like all corporations it will orchestrate terror where none exists to keep itself in the money… much the same way as McAfee and Norton give you the trojans… it is self fulfilling.

History repeats is a misnomer. The real way Nazi Germany, the Spanish Inquisition and Bolshevik Russia occurred is not the way we are told about it in the history books… look to who controls the message. Government are all the same religion and they are two arms of the same monster.

The jews need to figure out they have been under control and believing lies far longer than the goyem could ever hope to. So far they have been propheting from usury and willing to be the bad guys everyone points their fingers at… when they realize the depth of the deception they have collectively bought into, perhaps they will find their morality and their souls once again. Then we will get somewhere… then we can end this wholesale destruction and death.

Religion and government are the great evils of the world… and all governments are the same religion… two arms of the same beast.

I totally disagree that Edward Snowden is a patriot and it has nothing to do with NSA or the Obama administration. For the record, I believe Obama’s policies are the ruination of America. But having said that, one does not steal his country’s secrets and head off to the nearest enemy nation with them. That is precisely what Snowden did — he flew to China, then Russia, and now to possibly Argentina or Cuba where, presumably, he will reveal our national secrets to intelligence agents there. These countries are not our friend and given the right opportunity would do us harm. Our country might be wrong in what it does but there are ways of correcting this up to, and including, revolution, which is spelled out in the Constitution. In the meantime, Edward Snowden should be arrested, tried for treason, and, if found guilty, executed forthwith.

Snowden is not anything but what YOU perceive him to be.
I’m not neutral, if the circumstances are real, and why not just pick that as correct, because lies will fly all directions. I think he did the right thing, why, we do not know. Could he have run to Canada? no. England? no. somewhere he is mostly safe? yes. Those places just might be what is best thought of as a country with an axe to grind with the US government.
So, If you or I were Snowden, had access to the information he had, what would you do?
It is an unknown quantity, because I do not have access to this type of information to have myself in that situation, but I like to think I would do what Snowden did, but I cannot know that.
Do You, Jeremiah? What would you do?
That is the premise of Hornberger’s analysis, what do you do with information this powerful, this critical, depends on what type of person you are, where you see this in relation to your perception of how you like to think of your country and your place in it.
It is a very brave thing to do, right OR wrong and it has opened a great deal of beneficial dialogue through out the Nation and World.

Is he a Patriot? It depends on how you think the information Snowden released was being used by the Government or what it could be used for.
I am against the gathering of information on as many people as they can, just because they CAN gather it. I know for a fact that when bean counters and intellectuals get their hands on data, the end result will always be different than the intended reason for starting its collection.

I believe he is a Patriot, based on what he did for us.

Jeremiah, I do not think you have been in a position of a law biding naive citizen who identify wrong doings that affect life of other innocent people who trust the institution and but I have to criticise Snowdon. I am a doctor who helped thousands of kids and though numerous doctors. I lived in a cacoon since 1980s, working, worrying and reading to help sick kids.

One day in 2003, I start seeing patients coming back to see me with complications which was difficult for me to accept because the frontline staff, nurses and junior doctor had made similar mistakes. The junior doctors told me they were pressurised by senior nurses practitioners to follow the protocols and offer treatment. If the junior doctors did not follow their advice, the nurses would fill in a form called “Incident form”, instigate complaints and conduct disciplinary enquiry (Like the Nazi did).

Doctors were so scared, they would do what ever the nurse asked them to do. You can see the what happened in the NHS (UK) since 2003.

I started looking at what was happening and found out the authorities had handed over a set of rules (protocols) for nurses to follow and licenced them to clinically examine, diagnose, advice or prescribe drugs to patients, just to save few pennies. I am sure you people who developed complication would have paid to see me if they knew what will happen if they consulted a quacks but they did not know. Some patients asked me questions like “How could Mrs X a nurse suddenly call herself a doctor and work like a doctor?”,

What did I do? I followed the protocol of “Whistleblower” published in BMJ, discussed with others, did not breech confidentiality nor asked patients to take legal action and wrote a complant to the chairman. What these people in power did to me is simply unbelievable. The make Nazi look like an amateur. To tell you frankly, it would have been easier for me to walk in to a “Gas Chamber” and die than live like a destitute and face the world. They stopped paying me, because I refused to return to work saying the service they offer is Un-Ethical. Ttried to make me look like a sexual pervert using unsubstantiated claims, threatened, black mailed to make me sign a “Gag Order” and bring in an injunction to stop me publishing the documents. I refused to hand over the documents.

I left to live in another country because I was scared. These people in power are not human and they will do what it takes to make people like you believe they are doing right. So, please sit back and “THINK” and do not criticise others if you do not know or experienced any thing like me. At the end its your family and your children who suffer, not us.

 :!: I believe, along with many others including Dr. Michael Savage of “The Savage Nation” that Snowden is a “TRUE NATIONAL HERO”. The government has no business listening to my or your phone calls or reading our e-mails without cause and the approval of a judge. This spying reminds me of Germany in World War II and Russia during the cold war. Boy, wouldn’t they both love to have the spying technology we have today.
FREEDOM IS NEVER FREE, YOU HAVE KEEP YOU EYES, EARS OPEN AND FIGHT FOR IT EVERYDAY.

      peace love & happiness
      all else is illusion

    • UM...

If I was Snowden and I was not trying to be martyr, I would have fled to the countries that i was safe in until things took its course. Those countries are not our friend but they are harboring someone who is trying to inform us… Do you still believe they aren’t our friend? You better wake up and see who your real enemies are people. If that man comes back to US or any of US ally territories I bet any amount of money he will mysteriously die or go missing prior to trial, if not then after… That man will disappear just like this story, he will be another file in the pentagon’s cabinet, so more power to him.

    • G Dog

Could someone pls tell me exactly what “Secrets” Snowden stole. All I know is that he has proof that our corrupt government is spying on us. What else does he have?
