JUST IN: Detroit Files for Bankruptcy, Largest Bankruptcy in Country’s History
This afternoon the city of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection making it the largest bankruptcy in the history of the country at $18 to $20 billion.
The bankruptcy filing came after the Motor City was unable to reach debt restructuring agreements with its investors and creditors. A bankruptcy court must now decide if the city is eligible for bankruptcy protection and how much if anything its creditors will receive including city pension funds. The Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder still has to sign off on the bankruptcy filing.
The bankruptcy of the city of 700,000 residents is the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city has a super-majority African-American population at 82.7% with 6.8% population of Latinos/Hispanics.
This bankruptcy comes right as Moody’s Investors Services upgraded the U.S. credit rating from ‘negative’ to ‘stable’.
It was just some 50-years ago that Detroit had the richest per capita of any U.S. city according to the U.S. Census Bureau, many blaming the situation on a mired of reasons from white flight to the troubled auto industry to loss of manufacturing jobs that never came back. The population flight as jobs left has severely decreased the number of taxable properties.
The facts are stark for the city with 60% of all Detroit children living in poverty and over 30% of the city (140 square miles) vacant and decaying.
