NAACP Encourages DOJ To File Civil Rights Charges Against Zimmerman

Ben Jealous, NAACP writes:
A jury in Sanford, Florida has found George Zimmerman not guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin.
I know I am not alone in my outrage, anger, and heartbreak over this decision. When a teenager’s life is taken in cold blood, and there is no accountability for the man who killed him, nothing seems right in the world, but we cannot let these emotions alone rule.
In these most challenging of times, we are called to act. There is work left to be done to achieve justice for Trayvon. The Department of Justice can still address the violation of Trayvon’s most fundamental civil right — the right to life, and we are urging them to do so.
We continue to grieve the loss of Trayvon with his parents, his family, and all who loved him. Do not forget what brought us to this day.
George Zimmerman was arrested and charged because we would not back down when he was initially released. The Sanford Police Chief was removed from his post because we voiced our disbelief that he would overrule his detectives and block George Zimmerman’s arrest.
And, perhaps most importantly, not a single state has passed a “stand your ground” law in 2013 — the first time in eight years — because we refuse to let the memory of Trayvon fade from the hearts and minds of America.
So, now we have a choice: We can be felled by our sorrows over the jury’s decision, or we can turn our frustration into action. We can demand the Department of Justice address the travesties of this tragedy. We can take a step forward in our efforts to finally end racial profiling in America once and for all. What will you do, Monica?

Why don’t they do that after they file against the military for ALL the rapes committed over the decades!

What Civil Rights were violated? Right to life? Really … right to life.
Unbelievable twist through the back door on the use of guns to defend one’s self. Is that the end game after all? You can only defend yourself with a gun if the other guy has a gun? Otherwise you have to keep letting him bang your head on the cement. You’re saying that we are not allowed to kill in order to stop someone from assaulting us? Mind-boggling logic.
This would undermine self-defense as a right.
Sorry, that just does not wash. This is more about revenge and gun control than justice.
Anybody who disagrees with this verdict doesn’t know Florida law. This case was never about race or civil rights, so don’t fall into the trap of letting anyone (including the NAACP) tell you otherwise. The only witness produced by the prosecution clearly stated this young man was on top of Zimmerman beating him, and he immediately called 911 to get help. Under Florida law, Mr. Zimmerman was within his right to use deadly force to stop this attack. Although they repeatedly showed pictures of Martin as a 13 or14 year old boy on TV, in fact this was an almost 18 year old man who was much bigger/stronger than Mr. Zimmerman, and he was banging his head repeatedly on a concrete sidewalk.
It is very sad when something like this happens and someone so young loses their life (any loss of life is tragic), and we can all wish this young man had made better choices. But certainly no crime was committed and this was clearly an act of self defense allowed by state law. it’s just a very unfortunate event, and my heart goes out to this young man’s family (and to Mr. Zimmerman’s).
There are many lessons to be learned from what happened, but it certainly this case had nothing to do with civil rights. Unfortunately the media wasn’t honest in it’s reporting of this story which lead to national outrage by those uninformed about the facts. Anyone who takes the time to learn the truth about what happened here and how it relates to Florida law (like the jury was able to do) would reach the same conclusion and find him “not guilty”.
