World Celebrates the Birth of Royal Baby Boy ‘Prince of Cambridge’

Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William, gave birth Monday to a boy who will occupy third place in the line of succession to the British throne.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge was born at 4:24 p.m. in the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital.

The baby, whose name has not yet been announced, weighed 3.8 kilos (8 lbs., 6 oz.), Kensington Palace, the residence of William and Kate, said in a statement.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” the palace said.

Middleton, 31, was admitted early Monday to St. Mary’s Hospital with the first contractions.

The royal baby’s birth attracted vast media attention, with many photographers standing guard for weeks outside the hospital.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news,” the official statement said.

Middleton gave birth two years and three months after marrying Prince William in Westminster Abbey and assuming the title of Duchess of Cambridge.

The newborn prince will stand third in the line of succession, behind his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his father, Prince William.
