Obama Sidestepping UN, Ignoring Congress and American People

Obama is now saying that the U.S. has “looked at all the evidence…” and “concluded that the Syrian government in fact” carried out the attacks, “and if that’s so , then there need to be international conseqences.”

In an interview with PBS Newshour, Obama said, “So we are consulting with our allies. We’re consulting with the international community. And you know, I have no interest in any kind of open-ended conflict in Syria, but we do have to make sure that when countries break international norms on weapons like chemical weapons that could threaten us, that they are held accountable.”

He said nothing about consulting with congress despite being sent a letter signed by 56 bipartisan members of Congress asking him to get authorization from them before using military force in Syria. This is similar to the war in Libya when Obama sent Speaker of the House John Boehner a letter citing authority from the United Nation’s Security Council to use military force in Libya.

Remember also that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey cited “international permission,” rather than permission from Congress, as the justification for military action in Syria. They suggested that the UN or NATO could give them the “legal basis” for U.S. military involvement and that they might only inform Congress afterwards.

This time though, it seems that NATO might be the international organization of choice as the Wall Street Journal reports that in the case of a U.S. strike , “…it would do so with allies and without the U.N., in order to sidestep an expected Russian veto.”

Recent polls also show that the majority of Americans oppose an intervention in Syria. The massive momentum of western imperialism has created enough pressure on Obama that he is willing to ignore congress, the U.N., and the American public by going to war in Syria
