Every recent poll agrees, Americans see their quality of life deteriorating – perhaps for the first time in the history of the country.
I agree, too.
I’ve lived nearly 60 years in this country and have seen many changes – most of them bad.
An acquaintance who has lived half of the last 30 years outside the U.S. suggests his perspective on what’s happened in that time period affords more clarity.
“When things change for the worse gradually every day, the sneak-up-on-you effect comes into play,” he says. “But when one is away for five or six years at a time, the cumulative impact hits one right in the face.”
One question seldom asked by pollsters or pundits is: Who’s responsible for ruining America?
Let’s think about the social and political and moral changes that have shaken America and ask ourselves: Who did this? Who is killing America?
It’s a good topic for a book. But I’ll try to keep it lean and mean in this short commentary.

Education: Ask yourself if the schools are better or worse now than they were 30 or 40 years ago. Is there any doubt in anyone’s mind that they are worse – perhaps even nearing a crisis point in terms of discipline, instilling basic learning skills, teaching the rudiments of reading, writing and math and even just keeping kids safe? Who did this to our kids? Has the intrusion of the federal government into what had been essentially local education before 1979 been a positive factor or negative? Has any good come from it at all?
There are actually many destructive forces in American education – but government is the biggest. The near monopoly it holds on shaping the hearts and minds of future generations is downright scary. The symbiotic relationship government maintains with the teachers union is corrosive to the core. Test scores keep dropping, along with standards. America is producing more functional illiterates than at any time in its history. And don’t even get me started on academia – where the cost of higher education keeps rising and the benefits keep dropping. Today, for the first time, high school graduates earn as much as college graduates do. They just have less debt. Who ruined education in America? The government-progressive complex.

Look, I’ll be the first to say the so-called Religion of Peace is very ironically named. There’s even a great website by the same name that presents a daily littany of their crimes against nonbelievers, unliked sectarian believers, women, you name it.

The key to figuring out Isaiah’s codenames is simple: match Isaiah’s descriptions of the nations or people that existed in his day with those we find in the world today. Egypt, for example, was the great superpower of Isaiah’s day. At that time, however, Egypt was spiraling into a spiritual, economic, and political downturn. Prior to that, Egypt had been a defense against the other great superpower—Assyria. Assyria was a militaristic nation from the North that sought to conquer the then-known world. Indeed, it eventually succeeded in doing so. As with all nations and persons who appear in the Book of Isaiah, their true identity appears from the way Isaiah characterizes them, not from historical or archaeological data, though at times that may be of help. In searching the world today for a superpower that matches Isaiah’s description of “Egypt,” the sole candidate is America. That connection is further strengthened by the fact that God’s people anciently dwelt in Egypt, that Joseph ruled Egypt, and that the birthright tribe of Ephraim sprang from Joseph and Asenath, an Egyptian woman. Isaiah, therefore, uses Assyria’s destruction of the ancient world as an allegory of an end-time destruction. What happened in the past will happen again, only this time it will be with a new “Assyria” and a new “Egypt.” The same holds true for other nations and persons that play end-time roles. How Isaiah describes them tells us who they are. Just as a new “Assyria” and “Egypt” will be two opposing political powers, Isaiah’s Egypt, however, is a superpower imploding: “The ministers of Zoan have been foolish, the officials of Noph deluded; the heads of state have led Egypt astray. Jehovah has permeated them with a spirit of confusion; they have misled Egypt in all that it does, causing it to stagger like a drunkard into his vomit. . . . Manufacturers of combed linen and weavers of fine fabrics will be dismayed. The textile workers will know despair, and all who work for wages suffer distress. . . . I will stir up the Egyptians against the Egyptians; they will fight brother against brother and neighbor against neighbor, city against city and state against state” (Isaiah 19:2,9–10, 13–14).
