Witness Gives Video of Cop Killing Unarmed 22-Yr-Old Homeless Man to Media: Would You?
An eyewitness cellphone-videoed a female Santa Ana police officer shooting dead an unarmed 22-year-old homeless veteran at a shopping center earlier this week, and then did what many would be to afraid to do these days of whistleblower persecution: he anonymously leaked the video to CBS2.
Leaking evidence of government agency wrongdoing
The witness who leaked the video justifiably wished to remain unidentified, considering treatment of other whistleblowers exposing government criminal activities.
Standing in the parking lot of Harbor Place Shopping Center on South Harbor Boulevard around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the witness said he filmed a confrontation in front of Jugo’s La Tropicana between a police officer, later identified as a 13-year veteran, and victim Hans Kevin Arellano, who was in the restaurant.
“She exited her patrol car, gun drawn, and asked the gentlemen to get on the ground,” the witness said. “The gentlemen didn’t get on the ground, he was still inside the restaurant. She asked again.
“The man then exited the restaurant, and as he was exiting the restaurant, he said, ‘What are you gonna do, b—-?’
“About a second later, she shot him in the chest,” he said.
CBS2’s Michele Gile showed the video footage of the killing to Santa Ana Police.
“Obviously this is the first time we’ve seen this,” said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of Santa Ana Police Department. “This is something that is going to be a key piece of evidence. It’s something that we encourage people, if they have, to bring forward. This needs to get in the hands of the D.A. and our detectives.
“Like the chief said yesterday, we’re trying to be open and honest.”
Trying to be open and honest is costly for ordinary citizens in this era of retaliation and persecution against whistleblowers.
Trying to be open and honest has cost Bradley Manning his basic human rights. It has cost others, such as Edward Snowden, his freedom and security. It has cost others, such as the late Michael Hastings, his life.

Open and honest would mean fire this thug and put her up on murder charges by the end of the day and then push hard for conviction.
A hearty salute to the anonymous witness, media — and police head if he takes appropriate actions.
I hope that this person who took the video made a copy before relinquishing it to the police. I get the feeling that somehow it might go missing or get accidently destroyed.
There is no way this is the first time the chief of police has seen this sort of thing in his department, the only reason he’s doing anything at all about this event is becuase a citizen has hard evidence and has taken it to the media forcing his hand. Had police known someone had video of this event that person would have been arrested and the video destroyed.
What sad times we live in that we should question whether we report a crime. How criminalised the authorities have become, that we are afraid of what might happen to us for telling the truth and handing evidence in to prove it. What a corrupt world.
