Where's the Ammo?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It is consumer demand that keeps supplies of ammo nationwide low—and prices high. To figure out why, you might ask your neighbor.

Jon Draper * American Hunter

The NRA is regularly inundated with letters from members requesting an explanation of the nationwide ammo shortage. Some folks merely vent their frustration over the amount of ammo they are able to acquire for range sessions. Some complain about the jump in prices; they insist it can’t all be explained by supply and demand. Others are sure the government is buying up all the ammo so average Americans can’t get their hands on it. Everyone wants to know if we have any inside information.

Whatever you believe to be the cause for the shortage, the fact is ammo continues to be difficult to find. Store shelves are empty. If you’re lucky enough to find a few boxes, chances are either you or the person behind you in line will buy all that either of you can carry and stash it away like Private Pyle hides a jelly doughnut. So, is this the future of ammunition, or is there an end to the madness? I did my homework, and while my conclusions may not be the answers you’re looking for, they are at least based on fact.

Government Purchases

Let’s start at the rumor mill. The Internet is awash with reports of large acquisitions of ammunition by government agencies, and the pot-stirrers ran with it: They insist “the government took it all.”

But as reported on the NRA Institute for Legislative Action website (nraila.org), much of the concern over these government purchases stems from a lack of understanding of federal law enforcement functions and the agencies tasked with performing them.

For instance, the Social Security Administration (SSA) employs 295 special agents tasked with combating fraud; this is a law enforcement function. These agents have the power to execute warrants and make arrests; they are required to carry firearms. The 174,000 rounds of pistol ammunition recently solicited by the SSA works out to roughly 590 rounds for each of the 295 agents for periodic training, mandatory quarterly qualifications and duty use.

At first blush, the 46,000 rounds of .40 caliber ammo requested by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) seems like a waste of money for a bunch of lab coats arguing about the rain. But the reality is that ammo is going to the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement, a small outfit of 63 personnel who enforce marine importation and fishing laws. They carry firearms. It works out to about 730 rounds per officer per year.

The story I heard, repeatedly, was that the Homeland Security bought 1.6 BILLION rounds of ammo. They have less than 100k armed LEOs. When challenged, they denied it. Then they classified the purchase. Finally Congress got into the act and they admitted it. For the math challenged among us, that’s 1600 piles of pullets stacked a million high. Jon Draper might think this doesn’t stink, but I sure do. Ho hum, it’s just supply and demand, right? After NAFTA, we have virtually open trade borders and no shortage of ammo up in Canada. With plenty of willing customers willing to pay a premium, do they expect me to believe NOBODY has taken advantage of this business opportunity, or is it more likely our government is blocking importation of ammo and making it scarce here? Who should I believe, my own logic or my government?

      • Smiddywesson

bullets, not pullets. 1600 million pullets really would smell fishy.

        • Ozzboss

Well since you want to correct him on his grammar I would like to say that you don’t need a comma behind bullets and whats up with the period after pullets? I’m no expert myself but I am certain that you have punctuation errors in your statement thank you that will be all.

        • Ozzboss

My apologies you where correcting yourself. I win the Dumbass award of the day thank you that will be all.

You are right smiddy. Before the tragic school shooting in Ct. ammo was readily available. Obama didn’t get his way and outlaw some firearms through congress but he found a way, as he always does , around this. We should be protesting to the ammo makers. We should be pressuring them to not supply the feds before they put ammo back on the shelves. Big Sis did deny DHS ammo purchase right on TV I might add before congress. She refused to answer congress. If that had been you or I we would be playing golf in a federal prison now.

The Obama regime has open ended orders with multiple ammo manufacturers and they adjust their purchase according to consumer supplies. They’re buying anything from .22 – 7.62 soviet era surplus ammo.
Why? To drive up consumer prices as a means of controlling the volume of ammo people can afford. Like all of Obama’s policies it hits the poor the hardest. The kicker is they’re using tax dollars to do it. All while they’re arming radical jihadists throughout the muslim world. Guess where all that Soviet surplus is going……….paid for with your taxes.

    • RICH99

I have never had a problem buying since day 1

      • anon34

I agree people are looking into the wrong places. I found many online websites selling good quality AK ammo for cheap and always in stock.

        • patriotwolf

Always is always an understatement just saying

      • Ozzboss

Have you tried buying any .22LR? I would like to know where to get some the only place I found I paid $65 for a brick of .22 thunderbolts and all of the gun shops and retail stores have been out of stock. I have went to wal-mart and been told they just sold all that came on the truck several times. I suspect that the employees are buying the ammo the moment it comes of the truck.

    • patriotwolf

I didn’t have problems buying ammo but try to find .22 is really hard right now and I do fall bad for the guys who purchased Ar15s at 2400 bucks especially now that their coming back down to 700 bucks.

btw no thanks from any of you ?
          figures…

    • truthuncovered

Most of the ammo was 357 hollow point. 308 and 223 also had high numbers.

357 magnum hollow point is known as the best man stopper in the world and in history. It shoots accurately for 100 yards. It is a pistol. It will bring down any game in north america and any man as well. 1 shot…………

The type of ammunition purchased is the type for killing. Not injuring. It is ammunition for war not national security.
Why should the social security administration want to kill so much. The Fisheries?

This story is just that : a made up story that is designed to keep your distracted.

Job done since I read it all the way through

    • patriotwolf

Anonymous that said 22lr is back in stock is full of shizzles when a box of 50 cost 15$ and a brick cost 80 that means that its obviously not in stock it means it still supply and demand thus proofing oz boss Apache and my point go to the manufacture like winchester or federal and they say national shortage guess they must be losing huh

      • Anonymous

    • John P Grimes

Any place other than gun bot? I haven’t had luck there for 22lr.

      • Anonymous

Gunbot. net is a list of all the online providers of Ammo once you learn how to use it it is your best bet at finding the 22lr you are looking for the other guys post here that are talking crap just don’t know how to use it !
study the pages and learn how to use it ! you have to keep the page open on the ammo you are looking for you have to enable the audio tone that notifies you as the ammo post as available !
but above all especially with 22lr you have to act ASAP because some ammo disappears in seconds !
on sum supplier it is best to have all your info all ready loaded on their site IE: set up an account with the sites you will buy from !
because it is first in and first out that gets the prize !
        Good luck Bro…

    • ItsJustA38

A friend of mine works at one of the plants where they make ammunition. He told me the government gave all the factories that make ammunition a blanket purchase order for an infinite amount of ammo with no end date. For whatever reason, he said the government gets priority therefore, the manufactures have no choice but to put a majority of their efforts towards the government contract rather then to civilians.
