63 Cops Suspended after 137-Bullet Car Chase Ends with Two Unarmed People Dead

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

That’s a lot of of numbers for a headline. Here are a few more to complete it.

Following an unarmed couple fleeing a routine traffic stop in Cleveland back in December 2012, a total of 104 police officers — that’s right, one hundred and four — joined in a 25-minute pursuit where 13 officers fired a total of 137 bullets at the couple and their car. The driver, Timothy Russell, was shot 23 times and the passenger, Malissa Williams, was shot 24 times. While some speculated that the two may have been armed at the very least to garner such a forceful response, no actual weapons were recovered from either person or the vehicle.

Huffington Post quoted a lawyer representing the Russell family as saying, “You just can’t help but wonder how so many officers were able to shoot so many bullets at these two people in this vehicle,” while a patrolman/criminal justice professor said, “Police officers are authorized to use deadly force to protect themselves and others from great bodily injury or death. I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to stand there and let somebody run me over.”

Just as in the recent Washington D.C. car chase that reportedly ended in the death of Miriam Carey, no comment was made on why the couple was shot a combined total of 47 times instead of shooting out the car’s tires to render the vehicle unable to pose a threat or continue the chase.

Now, even though it has been ruled that 75 out of 104 officers broke rules in the chase, only 63 have been suspended (and only for a matter of days each):

With so many suspensions, the Cleveland Police Department must find a way to carry out the disciplinary actions without compromising the city’s safety. District commanders issued suspension letters to patrol officers on Tuesday, police said. While many suspensions are effective immediately, others will wait to ensure there’s no shortage of officers patrolling the streets.

(Because everything about these people patrolling the streets just screams “safety”. Let’s continue…)

“But more importantly, relative to this pursuit, it was the lack of engagement of the supervisors that allowed this pursuit to continue on,” [Cleveland Police Chief Michael] McGrath said at a news conference held by the Cleveland Division of Police.

McGrath said 12 police supervisors have undergone disciplinary hearings resulting in nine suspensions, two demotions and one termination.

As for the police officers involved in the chase, their actions were not found serious enough to deem termination, McGrath said. The most severe punishment is up to ten days of suspension, with most ranging between one and six days, totaling up to 178 days of suspension amongst the 63 officers. (source)

So many officers have been suspended at this point that the Cleveland Police Chief is concerned about the city’s safety. That punishment averages less than three days suspension per officer punished. At least officers are actually being held accountable in this particular story of police abuse of power (again, even if only for a few days).

If anyone needs any further proof that America has descended into a total police state, this story should be it. The only crime these people allegedly committed was running away unarmed.

What exactly about that requires 104 officers to hunt them down and put nearly 50 bullets into them? The two had minor priors and sure, they could’ve been hiding something illegal in the vehicle, but even if the entire car was filled with crack from roof to road so that the people sitting in it barely had room to fit in the car, would it have been worth the insane police state response that followed?

To get a basic idea, the infamous O.J. Simpson police chase, where he fled from police upon suspicion of murdering his wife and her lover 19 years ago only involved about 20 cop cars, and Simpson was armed with a gun.

Geez! I thought this story would be about a communist/oppressive regime, or a backwater South American despot country, or even a tiny ‘Barney Fife’ Mayberry-type police, but here in a major metropolitan city police department here in the US ?!?

      • anonymoustache

        So,this happened last year,right?

        How were they driving?
        Pretty volently,I’d imagine….

If this was an aggressive,high-speed pursuit,
        with threats to the public,
than I can see where they would start getting shot at-
the tires were probably shot at,also.

        104 officers,
        137 bullets.

Less than 2 bullets per cop….
        that’s almost Barney Fife.

        Seriously,people-
there are worse things going on now than then.

Is this all you can do is grouse about last years news?

        If they had stopped,
        they’d still be alive.

        104 cops?
        That’s quite a chase.

What was the story behind the plate, the car and the driver-
        Felony Fugitive….
        Armed&Dangerous?

Pretty vague on the details here but I don’t think that this was a case
        of “tag light out”.

So where did these responsible officers fire all of the stray bullets that you know were expended. The magazines in the officers pistols hold at least 15 rounds each, and there isn’t any evidence that each only fired their pistols twice. It’s a safe bet that like officers in Albuquerque, each emptied their magazines into the general area of the moving target…

        PS
        So,
I went and looked it up.

No shots fired until the end of the chase.

        Then,
the driver tried to charge the police with his car and they opened fire.

If you are unarmed but try to use your car as a weapon against 100 already very antagonized officers-
that’s “suicide by cop” as far as I’m concerned.

        Also,
they both tested positive for cocaine-
An investigator with the ME’s office said the presence of anhydroecgonine methyl ester in both of their systems indicates that the cocaine may have been smoked instead of snorted, as that chemical is a byproduct of cocaine being smoked.

The driver had a Blood Alcohol Content of .131.

        Bad situation,
but alcohol, drugs and playing chicken with
        100 cops IS suicide.

“So many officers have been suspended at this point that the Cleveland Police Chief is concerned about the city’s safety.” Safety? I’d much safer with zero cops on the force!

      • Syrin

        Amen to that.

      • dom.uncl

that s what I thought! with protectors like this, who need s crooks?!?

    • TombRaider

      “The officers were disciplined” ?

These thugs should have been charged with capital murder and faced a judge and jury…..

    • Neil Armstrong

I don’t think the officer’s involved had anything to do with the death of the 2 people in the car they probably never even un-holstered their weapons. It looks like a standard murder suicide to me.

    • greenghost

Why didn’t they stop for the police? But the sad truth is your more likely to be murdered by a cop than a gang member.

Cops no longer use deadly force as a matter of last resort, only when all other options fail, but rather they look for anything they think might sound plausible and give them enough of an excuse to kill someone.

Obviously if a CCW permit holder used those same standards to employ deadly force he or she would be looking at a lengthy stint in prison.

Of course, most CCW holders have no desire to kill someone, they simply wish to protect. Police have no desire to protect, they (many of them) simply want to kill.

And of course it’s paid suspension. To look like they are being reprimanded. Soon will be these pigs turns to be the hunted.

Keystone Kops are well and truly alive

    • TruthHurts

what do you even do with such corruption?

there is a problem with their recruiting and training and leadership i suspect. unfortunately one can only move away, there’s no fixing that.

they all think they have a “license to kill” – now why would they ALL think that???

The communist police know that they HAVE to BE NOTICED if they will be “good” enough to be in the islamic communist regime puppet’s PERSONAL PRIVATE POLICE FORCE ARMY to protect America from THE TEA PARTY TERRORISTS because there AREN’T any iSLAMIC TERRORISTS only the islamic “FREEDOM FIGHTERS” that the islamic communist puppet gives MILLIONS and WEAPONS to.

      Murder Suicide??? :???: :???:

“The driver, Timothy Russell, was shot 23 times and the passenger, Malissa Williams, was shot 24 times.”

If this was a murder suicide then the Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams are 2 tough people… OH, and by the way, they were unarmed…..

“Command failed, communications failed, the system failed,”
Attorney General Mike DeWine during a news conference at the state crime laboratory.

–This whole affair may have started after the car backfired as it drove by a cop….

“A forensic mechanic’s inspection determined “within a reasonable degree of mechanical certainty” that the Malibu had multiple conditions it would need to backfire and that backfiring had occurred.”
“He (Officer Hummel ) told investigators he heard the Malibu backfire several times during the pursuit, leading him to believe it was that sound — and not gunshots — that led to the chase.”

“He’s pointing the gun. He’s pointing the gun out the back window. Heads up. Heads up. Passenger is pointing a gun out the back window. Everybody be careful,”
Cleveland cop David Siefer radioed fellow officers
–Siefer later told investigators he didn’t actually see a gun.

      “Later, Siefer reported that he witnessed the Malibu ram a Ford Crown Victoria police car on an East Cleveland side street. That also appeared to be inaccurate.}

      Define idiot:
“But when the smoky haze — caused by rapid fire of nearly 140 bullets in less than 30 seconds — dissipated, it soon became clear that more than a dozen officers had been firing at one another across a middle school parking lot in East Cleveland.”
      http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/02/cleveland_police_chase_and_shooting_scene.html

      In Top Ten Police Scandals;
      Cleveland Police Corruption Scandal
Beginning in 1995, dozens of Ohio cops from numerous jurisdictions operated a police-protected drug courier ring for a group of drug runners. This “mob” had even initiated the ringleader, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department officer Michael Joye, and turned him into a “made man.”

It all came crashing down in 1998, however, when the FBI concluded the largest sting in the bureau’s history, leading to the arrest of 44 Ohio cops. Ultimately, 30 were convicted, including Joye, who had described himself and the cops he recruited as a “goon squad.”

Here is one far-fetched (not) plausible scenario of what could have happened, may have happened, we will never know:
Officer sitting in patrol car drinking coffee and munching dough-nuts while selling drugs stolen from other drug dealers, out of the patrol car window.
Backfiring car drives by dough-nut cop, and startled cop drops coffee and dough-nut crumbs in lap thinking that someone saw him dealing drugs. Cop radios he is being shot at knowing that he will be id’ed as a drug runner like the other cops if he doesn’t stop the witness.
Buddies join in chase and more cops say that they see a gun when no one really did. Cops end chase surrounding car and begin shooting…at each other!
Community outraged, police chief so mad he tells boys that as punishment they will get a paid vacation, er, I mean, a suspension.
      Well, that’s one scenario, anyway.

Eh, we just got done playing grand theft auto. Its cool to just murder people at high speeds right?

This whole story boarders on insanity!! And so are some of the responses I see to this story. First, if they were high on coke and booze, they did not act rationally. Second, 104 cops to take them down is truly sad. The cops really blew this one. They should all be fired for being stupid, along with their bosses. In this period of time, it is encouraged to kill first and not worry if it is right or wrong. Beforeitsnews has reported on the type of training cops are getting now days. What about “homeland militia” are people not getting. They are being to trained to kill Americans, both good or bad. NWO is ruling, population reduction as well as control is the goal.
