Alzheimer’s And Aluminum Toxicity: Are They Linked?

Aluminum Toxicity: what is the relationship between Alzheimer’s? Do we know what might be causing this debilitating epidemic?

Exposure to aluminum is usually not harmful, but exposure to high levels can cause serious health problems. The subject of aluminum toxicity has caused much controversy for several decades and since the amount of aluminum seems enormous in products that we use daily, it has become a serious health concern.

According to Neuropathologist, Dr. Daniel Perl of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, “Deficits of calcium and magnesium combined with the accumulation of heavy metals such as aluminum may play a role in the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease“. The tangled nerve fibers in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease contain unusually large amounts of aluminum, according to his research.

Alzheimer’s disease, or senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type, will be one of America’s greatest health problems in the coming years. Sixty percent of patients now admitted to nursing homes have this diagnosis, and the number of Alzheimer’s victims is projected to increase as much as eight-fold by the middle of the next century.

There is a strong connection between aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease. Research clearly demonstrates abnormally high accumulations of aluminum within the brains of Alzheimer’s victims. Independent studies performed in Norway, the United Kingdom, France and Canada, show a direct correlation between the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and aluminum concentrations in the drinking water.

It is everywhere in our environment, in the air, metal tins, and in our water. Aluminum cookware when used to make our families meals puts them at danger because the aluminum will leak out into water and food.

It is in food additives such as processed cheeses, table salt, baking soda and powder, pickles, bleached flour, prepared dough, cake mixes, non-dairy creamers, and some donuts and waffles. Milk formulas for babies can contain up to four hundred times more aluminum than breast milk.

It is is also in over-the-counter medications such as antacids, which can contain 200 milligrams or more of elemental aluminum in a single tablet. Certain popular antacids contain aluminum hydroxide as well as pain killers and diarrhea medications. Aluminum can be found in hygiene products and cosmetics such as toothpastes, anti-antiperspirants, dental amalgams, cigarette filters and pesticides.

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease causes brain changes that gradually get worse. It’s the most common cause of dementia — a group of brain disorders that cause progressive loss of intellectual and social skills, severe enough to interfere with day-to-day life. In Alzheimer’s disease, brain cells degenerate and die, causing a steady decline in memory and mental function.

Senile dementia is the term given to many different diseases producing dementia. Over half of all dementia cases are sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease. Protect yourself as best you can by avoiding products containing aluminum.

Memory loss is not the only indication of Alzheimer’s disease, since in the early stages the symptoms of the disease are varied. Every patient seems to develop at different stages. Some cases literally lose their ability to remember and even to function almost overnight, in other cases the disease progresses very slowly. Effects of the disease include: disorientation and misinterpreting spatial relationships, speaking and writing, making judgments and decisions, changes in personality and behavior among other things.

There are many factors or combinations of factors that may cause Alzheimer’s disease and research is ongoing. Our deteriorating environment, chemicals, plus nutritional deficiencies are all factors which may well precipitate the disease.
