10 Things Food Banks Need But Won’t Ask For

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Please be kind and Christian and help your fellow human beings in their times of need.  No persons, especially children, should go hungry this Christmas or anytime of the year.  Food banks are often run by your local churches or community centers.  The gift of giving is te greatest of all.  -Mort

1. Spices.

Think about it. People who rely on the food bank eat a lot of canned food, rice, oatmeal, white bread, etc. They love spices. Seasoned salt, cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, oregano, basil and so on.

2. Feminine Products.

Can you imagine being worried about affording these? Pads, tampons, panty liners, etc. Recommended: Buy in bulk at Costco for donating.

3. Chocolate.

People don’t need it, but think about being in their shoes and how nice it would be to be given a chocolate bar or brownie mix along with your essentials.

4. Toiletries.

Grocery stores are great about donating surplus or unsold food, but they have no reason to donate toilet paper, tooth paste, soap, deodorant, shampoo, etc. Food stamps often don’t cover these.

5. Canned meats and jerky.

This isn’t true of all food banks, but some struggle to give users enough protein.

6. Crackers and tortillas.

They don’t spoil and everybody likes them.

7. Baby toiletries.

Diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, baby shampoo, baby soap, baby food, bottles, etc.

8. Soup packets.

Sometimes you look at rice, beans, instant potatoes, and cans of vegetable and think, “What do I make with this?” Hearty soup is a complete meal.

9. Socks.

From a former homeless person: “Socks mean the world to you. They keep you warm, make you feel like you have something new, and just comfort you.”

10. Canned fruit other than pineapple.

Food banks get a lot of pineapple donated. Their clients love it when other kinds of fruit are available.

      Great post, Mort!

      I shared it.

Hopefully, this will help people provide for the needy, with more consideration.

Unfortunately, (some) of the persons in the food banks will take out the nicer items and not distribute them as they we intended by the generous givers. I saw this personally while staying in an area where I witnessed the “weeding out” of items. Please make sure that the place you donate to WILL distribute to the needy and not to the people that work at the center. Very important!!!

      Thank you so mich, Mort!

What many people may not know is, that while gathering food is a “feel good” thing to do, and a valuable community effort, the food banks have resources for very inexpensive bulk food. Ask your local food bank if money is a more useful donation. Our local food bank can feed five people for every dollar donated. Almost impossible to do if food is purchased retail and dropped off.

It all counts, though! God Bless and Merry Christmas!

I will give food and other necessities but I don’t trust charities ie food banks with my money .

What they need is to be giving it the elderly and disabled who cant get to ‘food banks’, not mr and mrs 7 kids who just spent this weeks money on lottery tickets / booze / drugs.

most food banks won’t take toiletries and do not give chocolate everyone thinks that way on the average week ice cream ice cream cookies and cake mix and not enough nutritional food i don’t have the eggs or oil to even make the cake bad advice!
