Another Latina Exits CNN’s Anchor Desk
CNN has confirmed that Zoraida Sambolin, co-host of “Early Start” is leaving the cable network on Friday, December 13. The show runs on the 5-7 a.m. time slot and is co-hosted by John Berman.
This is the latest Latina to be exiting the cable network that already has few Latinos on its on-air roster as anchors or guest panelists. Earlier this year Soladed O’Brien, 47, announced her departure from CNN to run her own production company. O’Brien at the time was host of “Early Start” and was replaced by Sambolin.
CNN has not announced who will take Sambolin’s spot or what the future of “Early Start” is. More importantly they have made no effort to address the lack of Latino/Hispanic on-air talent. In 2012 when both Latinas worked at CNN they were the only two Hispanics out of 21 anchors. None they are both gone.
In 1997, CNN en Español was created to reach Spanish-speaking households. This year CNN Latino launched offering eight-hour custom-programming for the Latino-heavy markets like Miami, Los Angeles and New York.
Sambolin, 48, who hails from Chicago will be returning home “exploring” opportunities there. Earlier this year the mother of two was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy that she openly discussed with her audience. The Latina anchor joined CNN in 2011 from NBC Chicago.
