Obama’s Foreign Policy In General; And How big a snub to Russia is Obama’s Sochi ‘boycott’?

Liberals and Obama supporters, here are some rhetorical questions worth thinking about. How would you like important leaders around the world boycotting and snubbing the United States because the US has the largest prison population over all other nations in per capita and aggregate terms, and that the United States has what now can not be called anything less than a prison industrial complex? Imagine a leader snubbing the US because the US has an open policy of being willing to kill anyone via drone strike anywhere, including within the United States and US citizens abroad. Do we really want to “mix” just any political issue with normal diplomatic relations?

While we’re not talking about an outright boycott of the Olympics, unlike the US position taken in 1980 following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, this is still indicative of a purposeful snub.  It’s childish, just as the George W. Bush administration’s purposeful snub to China was, back in 2006, when the Taiwanese national anthem was played at a White House formal reception for China.

Certainly, Russia’s record on civil liberties is nothing worthy of praise.  But the United States is far from innocent.

Within a big picture context, Obama’s international relations skills and diplomatic savvy leaves much to be desired.  Consider the “deal” with Iran for a prime example of fumbling. The US conducted secret talks for over a year, greatly angering our regional allies.  Obama claim a solid deal was executed pursuant to Iran giving up it’s nuclear program.  But within a couple of days, Iran indicated the deal had little resemblance to what the Obama administration claimed. I’m sorry, but it’s not a partisan position to question just what the heck is going on with these keystone cops.

For the record, I’m of the view that the Obama administration is deeply concerned about the rising power of China. That concern is motivating an attempt to get Iran more within the Anglo-American axis, and to make Iran a counter-balance to China. It’s not all that different from how the United States played both India and Pakistan against each other and, in turn, against the Soviet Union.

We don’t have all the answers yet, but the story below prompted a number of rhetorical questions I thought I’d share.
