Pittsburgh's Christkindlmarket-a photo essay

Pittsburgh’s Christkindlmarket (Christmas Market) is in its second year and I have to say I definitely think it’s improved significantly when compared to its inaugural debut. Many of the booths sell stunning wares and I myself have gotten an advent calendar from Germany (the front features a vintage illustration of a German town) and a darling ornament of a teddy bear dressed in traditional lederhosen with a stein in hand. I’d love to buy so many things but then there comes the point where you have to ask yourself, “Do I really need another ornament for the tree or another article to sit around collecting dust?” The answer to both is of course no, and yet that doesn’t mean your consumeristic heart that is besotted with goods from other countries, especially holiday themed ones, wouldn’t like to indulge and say yes. And while you can’t go wrong with the strudel booth nor the one that sells Greek pastries, I still wish there were more food options. I’m somewhat surprised there aren’t since where there is food, people generally will spend (i.e. food at airports and sporting events).  There is also a place to visit with Santa and a booth selling Christmas trees and other greens.

All in all, the Christkindlmarket is a great addition to Pittsburgh’s holiday scene since not every American city does have one making it even more unique.

The market is open daily from 10 AM and will be operating through December 23. It’s located in Market Square.
