Dangerous 60 Mile Toxic Chemical Plume Passing Louisville Headed Down Stream To Mississippi River pictures and video

by Monica Davis

It is scary how the mainstream media has minimized the danger of the 60 mile long chemical plume making its way down the Ohio River in West Virginia to the Mississippi River. And ts even more frightenuing when cities and the government pick and choose information to minimize possible dangers.

The CDC has revised their  recommendations, and now says water from the West Virginia chemical spill  should not be consumed by pregnant women until methycyclohexane methnol, knownat MCHM,  levels reach ZERO. That is because there are very few studies on the toxicity of  MCHM.

Without firm data and tests, no one can say how much, if any, of the chemical is safe.

Some cities, such as Louisville, Kentucky and Evansville, Indiana, don’t have enough water storage capacity to shut their water plants down until the chemical plume passes. They have to derpend on carbon filters to keep MCHM out of their city water as it heads downstream.

Residents of Charlestown, West Virginia have experienced chemical burns, irritated eyes and skin rashes after coming in contact with MCHM contaminated water. It may take years before the effects of this chemical spill are fully known.

This is not a drop of catsup or mustard that fell into a jar of water. This is a13,000 gallon chemical spill that has become a 60 mile long chemical plume that is moving down river toward New Orleans.  These are the arrival times for the plume

The mainstream media continues to attempt to minimize the uncertainty which surrounds this chemical contamination, comparing it to a drop in a swimming pool. What they ignore is that some chemicals are so toxic that a drop or a gallon, depending on what chemical we are talking about, CONTAMINATES THE WHOLE POOL.

It is common for us to associate contamination with things such as landfills, gas stations, big industry and agriculture, but we must also remember that contamination can come from everyday activities.  It can come from septic systems, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, runoff from highways, beauty shops, and photo processing labs.  Did you know that one gallon of pure trichloroethylene, which is a solvent, can contaminate approximately 292 million gallons of water?  This is the same as saying that 1 drop will contaminate approximately 75,000 gallons of water- the size of an Olympic swimming pool. That source notes that the media may be leading people down the trail of false security.

The mainstream media reports that things are starting to look a little brighter after a chemical spill in West Virginia resulted in a complete ban on tap water last week. Residents were urged not to use the water for drinking, cooking, or even for bathing because of an industrial accident that released toxic chemical 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol into the municipal water supply.

Local authorities report that the water is now safe in some areas, partially lifting the ban, with the careful wording that the current levels of chemicals in the water are “believed to be safe”.  Local stores ran out of water very quickly after the spill occurred, and those without stored water were left to fight it out over the few remaining bottles within a day of the accident.

But is it really safe? Opinions seem divided.

“Based on the water sampling data that we have seen, we think that allowing the water to be used for drinking and cooking and all the other things is perfectly appropriate,” said Dr. Vikas Kapil, chief medical officer for the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health.

The 1 part per million guideline, he told reporters Thursday, “is a level not likely to be associated with adverse health effects.”

But during situations like this, he admitted, there are often questions investigators can’t answer — at least not at first.

Scott Simonton, vice chairman of the West Virginia Environmental Quality Board, said he isn’t so sure the water is safe.

“I don’t think that just because it’s below that number, it’s magically safe,” said Simonton, a professor of environmental science at Marshall University. “We don’t know enough about the toxicity of this particular chemical to know what its long-term effects are and what the maximum contaminant level really should be.” (source)

Many of these downriver politicians and water treatment operators are far too casual about this mess and put a lot of faith in their treatment plant’s carbon filters to eliminate the problem. Louisville, Kentucky and Evansville Indiana do not have the capacity to store clean water and shut their water treaatment plants until the chemical plume passes. They must depend on carbon filters to filter the chemical and make it safe.

According to new, revised CDC recommendations, this means .

Offering further evidence that ingesting this might not be a good idea, although officials say that the water is safe, they are warning pregnant women not to consume it.  The director of the CDC, Dr. Thomas Frieden , recommends caution. ”Due to limited availability of data, and out of an abundance of caution, you may wish to consider an alternative drinking water source for pregnant women until the chemical is at non-detectable levels in the water distribution system.”See more
