Edward Snowden: “If I Had Revealed What I Knew… To Congress, They Would Have Charged Me With A Felony”

Freedom Outpost

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Edward Snowden’s decision to expose the unconstitutional spying on every American, and by in large the world, by the NSA. Some call him a traitor for his actions while others call him a hero. Regardless of which term you apply to him, the main issue becomes the unconstitutional action of our government against its own citizens. Everyone can agree that not all spying is a bad thing; governments have been using many means to spy on each other to gather information on a variety of subjects from technological advances to military movements and strategies. However, when spying by the government is done indiscriminately for frivolous reasons totally unrelated to any issue involving securing or protecting the nation, the action has overstepped the accepted and practiced standard.

In a recent online session with Courage Foundation, Snowden, speaking from Russia, stated not all spying is bad and the United States has an opportunity to take the lead in acceptable targeted surveillance standards.

According to Snowden, “The biggest problem we face right now is the new technique of indiscriminate mass surveillance, where governments are seizing billions and billions and billions of innocents’ communication[s] every single day. This is not done because it’s necessary – after all, these programs are unprecedented in US history, and were begun in response to a threat that kills fewer Americans every year than bathtub falls and police officers – but because new technologies make it easy and cheap.”

Mr. Snowden, whether you know it or not, the U.S. has already charged you with a felony. That’s why you can’t come back to this country.
      Rock on!

Washington and Jefferson and Adams were all traitors; Mandela was a terrorist.

If you know that blowing the whistle and exposing government crimes and lies will result in your imprisonment (or worse), what should you do? If you trust the criminal justice system, you can commit civil disobedience. But what if the system cannot be trusted? Look at what happened to the other whistleblowers, including Manning, who exposed government murder of civilians.

Exposing government crimes and lies is necessary; therefore, each whistleblower must look at the consequences and choose the course which most guarantees their freedom and fair treatment. Snowden assessed (correctly) that whistleblowers are just locked up, and decided to expose government overreach while protecting his own freedom.

IF the US had treated whistleblowers against the government with fairness his actions would not be justified. But given the reality, he did the right thing.

Why is unconstitutional government spying ok while exposing the government conduct is considered criminal? The double standard used by the government means that civil disobedience is not an effective method of challenging the government.

The government can spy on you, an innocent citizen, but you cannot expose this spying without the threat of being locked up for a long, long time, regarded as a spy.

Snowden is not spy; he is a whistleblower and he has risked his life and career to expose the puiblic to the government’s violation of our basic rights. Those who risk all for others are heroes.

Putting snowden in prison or killing him will make his friends outside of the USA release information that will cause deep resentment against the USA and other countries assisting them in the spying, from the rest of the world, this could even result in a USA civil war when the people realise how they have been duped all these years. If it leads to any information proving USA involvement in 911 the government will collapse.

USA had nothing to do with 9/11. As bad a president Bush was, he wasn’t a terrorist.

The USA isn’t a guy, fool- it’s an organization and the President is a small part of that organization. And yes, Bush is on record having committed multiple crimes to achieve a political goal, which is the definition of the word terrorist. The same is true for Cheney and Rumsfeld and Obama. If you don’t know this then you haven’t been paying attention for some time.

Multiple criminals within the government making a few calls and getting the right people on board is all it takes to carrry out a false flag attack. Just look at Operation Northwoods.

The problem, as I see it, with NSA spying on people is not that they are doing it. The problem is the people involved in the gathering and warehousing all that data. In most cases the content of the data is of no consequence to anyone. But some may contain very private personal data that in the hands of unscrupulous people can be used for criminal action. Some people are very good at avoiding temptation while others can not help them selves and give in to the slightest opportunity to indulge. There are no guarantees that the people handling all this data will not give in when tempted. There is no way to vet a person’s character completely. Keeping in mind the huge amount of data and the number of people involved the chance for abuse is great. To date, I have not seen evidence of this activity ever preventing any terrorist event. Every attempted terrorist act foiled was due to civilian vigilance and action. The FBI had advance warning about the two people setting the bombs at the Boston Marathon. That information was looked at and discounted as unimportant. So having this information is not an indication that it will have any affect on curtailing acts of terror. Public vigilance is a better deterrent in preventing acts of terror. The other action that must be taken is to elect people to office that recognize where the dangers is, who the people that present a danger are, and have the fortitude to expose the danger and then act upon it.

I’d rather sign a petition demanding that *everyone* advocating, participating, or defending NSSA targeting of Americans be tried for treason, as their activities constitute a cold war being levied on the USA by the National Security Subverrsion Agency.
