With the recent New Madrid earthquake near Kevil, KY. Sunday, we are reminded of the danger and powerful earthquakes that the New Madrid fault zone can produce. Though this earthquake was small, the fault zone could be waking up to even more activity.

There has also been recent unexplained “booms” that sound like distant thunder or explosions that have been reportedly heard across the tri-state area in the past few weeks. Reports of another unexplained boom was felt and heard Sunday afternoon just before 2:00 pm, about four and a half hours before the 6:35 pm earthquake. These have been associated with activity within the New Madrid fault. Before the big earthquake of 1811 Loud Thunder Sounds of distant thunder and the sound of loud explosions accompanied the earthquakes. Local reports of these pre earthquake sounds can be read here, here, and here.

Scientists say it’s only a matter of time before a big earthquake occurs in the New Madrid fault zone. According to FOX 2 St. Louis, Scientists say there’s a 7-10 percent chance of a 7.5 to 7.7 magnitude quake hitting in the next 50-years. To put this in perspective You have a 16% chance of calling a single roll of a six sided die. This is twice as high as the chance of a major quake.

The next killer earthquake could strike right here in the Midwest at any given moment. I live close by and felt a little rumble but the booming noise that came before it seemed to rumble just as much.

Here is a State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) page for Missouri Earthquake Preparedness. http://sema.dps.mo.gov/earthquake_preparedness/

I have noticed several state governments advertising on the radio, Illinois for one, to be prepared for a disaster and offer websites to go to for info. What do they know that they are not telling us? My child came home from Pre K the other day with a preparedness Survival bag with pictures printed on the bag of the items that we should put in the bag.

The government seems to be preparing the Midwest for something…..but what?

I seen an article on that while searching for the Kentucky boom links. I would keep an eye out for earthquakes. Are that doing a lot of oil well fracking there?
