I always go out of my way to call the usually-abbreviated LSE, The London School of Economic and Political Science. Because it’s important how close the ties are between Finance and Politics, and Science. They’re ‘like that’, intertwines fingers to show closeness. Economics and Politics (Science of) are joined at the hip.

So too, it seems, are Politics and Voting reinforced by research put forward by Theos* (a think tank which believes “you can’t understand the modern world without understanding religion”) suggesting that, wait for this stunner, “Specific religious denominations have general voting affiliations.” Is this ‘by design’ or ‘by chance’?

Is there such a thing as a religious vote in the UK? William Crawley discusses that question with Maria Sobolewska, a Lecturer in Politics at the University of Manchester and Nick Spencer Research Director at Theos, as a report sheds new light on the subject. [source BBC]

Now, that’s NOT gonna be new news for the Americans who already have their so-called Moral Majority or Religious Vote, but for the English this has very interesting implications (you’ll understand this once you see the affiliations) namely ATTENDANCE, and immigration. Here’s the list of religious political affiliations i.e. who they ‘tend to vote for’, consider the attendance figures of the following denominations and see which is more likely to win in a Religious Voting War.

ŠŠAnglicans vote Conservative.
Catholics vote Labour.
Nonconformists vote Liberal Democrat.
Muslims vote Labour.
Jews vote Conservative.
Hindus vote Labour.
Sikhs vote Labour/Conservative.
Buddhists vote Liberal Democrat.

Now, what of this attendance issue? Well, the Muslims win (obviously) and, as it’s explained in the programme, a southeast Asian muslim will vote for a different party than an Arab muslim, given a choice. This is mere fine-tuning though to the general finding that there is DEFINITELY a Religious Vote in this country, as places like LSEAPS and its ilk will have known for Centuries. God bless a University education.
