Veteran Arrested For Asking Cop To Show ID

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Eric E shared this post via CopBlock.org’s submit page.

I was pulled over on November 19th and arrested within three minutes of first contact, without having done anything illegal.

The reason given for the initial stop was an alleged lack of lights on a bicycle. The officer asked me for an ID and I responded by asking if I was legally required to show an ID. (I knew I was not. If the officer had reasonable suspicion that I had committed or was about to commit a crime, I would have been compelled to give my name, and I would have if asked. But he never once asked for my name, only for a physical ID, which I am not even required to carry.)

He stated that any time his lights were flashing I was required to show an ID, which is simply not true. I started filming and asked to see some identification from him. He refused and, as you can see in the video, put me in handcuffs almost immediately, without having even given me a full name or badge number, and repeatedly refusing to tell me what the probable cause for the arrest was.

For more info on what happened, and to see a transcript of the audio please check out: www.rule-the-wasteland.blogspot.com

For a video of me going into a little bit more depth explaining what happened, check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYFO5mLeA7g

I would appreciate it if everyone could spread this video and contact GPD and express their concerns about the conduct of their officers, especially officer Benjamin Blake.

Are you really a veteran? I live in a town that has a VA Hospital with many veterans in the area, but I don’t see any stupid enough to ride a bicycle without lights in the dark on a highway. The police officer was only doing his job when he stopped you. You were a danger to yourself and others around you. You, young man, in my opinion needed to be stopped.

      • Richard

kjat – your post suggests you are here trolling for people to call “stupid”.
The article suggests maybe the riders’ rights were stepped upon when he gets jammed for not kneeling and showing ID. He really doesn’t have to be a veteran to have the rights. Until we officially embrace the style govt. of, say an East Germany, we still are NOT required to produce our “papers”.
You, young man, need to take a few deep breaths.

        • kjat

FYI – The title to this article is deceptive. But, you are correct about one thing. My use of the word ‘stupid’ was wrong. I should have used the word ‘irresponsible’. My reason being, the man in the video is taking a huge risk by riding his bicycle on a highway in the dark without lights.

There are other people on the highway and his recklessness could have caused a major accident inuring or killing someone. If an accident had happened in which the man in the video had been hurt, my bet is he would beg for a police officer to help him. -just sayin-

    • Bronson

It is very understandable not having lights on your bike. I know a Vietnam Vet that could not afford tires, and rode his bike on rims. Basically people should not be harassed for doing the best they can with what they have.
people that say otherwise would love to see you living in a trash can, and not offer any help, but if your trying to do the best you can, they will back stab you…….
Bottom line they will kick you when you are down, and not give you the chance to get on your feet.

      • kjat

Bull crap! There are many good people in this country that love to help others and hate evil. That’s a fact. Sure, there are some who are insecure within themselves, that is just part of life. But once again, this man was riding a bicycle on a busy highway at night with no lights. The police officer did not know what was going on and stopped the man to find out. That was all. The man who as stopped was being unreasonable with the officer. That is what I saw in the video. By the way, I’m a veteran too.

You do not seem to realize there is a new Doctrine within the Amerikanish SS Gestapo.
I have witnessed it 1st hand, although will not go into details.
Sure there are some so called good Cops, but are they really? yes they live by a code, and they know not to speak out…..Oh no, they would have hell to pay.
Who knows, you may be one of them? or living some dream world sheltered life.

Your living some sheltered life, a dream world. Bud when you wake up, and find that jackboot on your neck, who is going to hear you?

The stupid part is, you want to claim someone is stupid for riding a bike with no lights…..You know what is really stupid, is a Cop shooting a guy in the head for trying to put together an Air soft gun, that shoots foam darts.

They are trained to shoot, yes shoot no matter what……..They need to take away all the expensive cars, suv, even tractor trucks from them, and put the cops on bicycles, and make sure their friggin lights work….Ehhhhhhh?

How many times do I have to keep saying this before it catches on?
“To Protect & Serve” is long gone as the official “Police” slogan. It was designed to instill trust and a feeling of safety when in the presence of the police.
Though not officially accepted by the new “Militaristic” police departments of today, “Comply or Die” is more befitting of their actual interaction with the public as demonstrated on a daily basis.
Unless one wonders into an area riddled with crime like, let’s say, most of Chicago or Washington DC, then the average citizen is in subjected to more danger of physical harm or death when confronted by a police officer than at any other time in their lives.
One wrong question, move, gesticulation, misunderstanding, etc and you are likely to be beaten, exposed to intense pain (torture) by means of an electronic device designed to interrupt the electrical impulses in your body, false imprisonment, false charges and even more abuse up to and including being murdered.
When did the occasional beat-down of a career criminal with a bad attitude by the police (to straighten his ass out) turn into standard operating procedure when engaging any citizen who has dared to not completely stop at a stop sign or having a tail light out?
I know of one old man who was killed by the police when they broke in his door around 1:00 or 2:00am. The old man in a desperate attempt to protect his wife, by what he thought was a home invasion, reached for his shotgun. He was shot over 40 times and died at the scene. Turns out the police were performing a “Drug Raid” but had transposed the address so were at the wrong house. From what I heard none of the officers involved were ever charged with any crime.
It sickens me to see what our police departments have become. Your safety and well being are the very least of their concerns. Finding something to fine you for, or even better, place you under arrest is what they (not all but all too many) live for. To most of them, if you ain’t a cop then your a piece of crap.

      • Bronson

        Your totally right!!!!!
I can not understand fully why most people cannot see this. I have been saying all along…..their training is secret, and at the same time so upfront with their actions.

      • Fish

        Well put.

    • HerusaAustsaAusar

pedestrians have the right of way …and veterans pave the way

    • WCS

I’m not going to say you are right because you where on the hwy with no lights. You have to have lights if you are riding ANYTHING on a Hwy at night, that’s just the law. But, he should have provided you with his name, badge #, informed you why you where being taken in (AKA: what law you broke) and read you your rights. Because he did not do these things he is just as wrong as you where. I expect better from cops, needless to say I get let down a lot because of that. Anyway, you will walk if you chose to go to court, just make dam sure you get a attorney as there is no way in hell you are going to be able to defend yourself and will lose if you try. TRUST ME ON THAT, I have heard you speak and would guess that you do not have much of a background in law so get a attorney to defend you. Sad part is that I feel that if you had played along this would not have been an issue.

      • kjat

Excellent points. This article has received my attention because I’m a veteran who’s only wheels are a bicycle. I know first hand how dangerous highways can be, even during daylight hours.

If I were to see a person riding down a highway on a bicycle in the dark with no lights, I would be concerned not only for the bicyclist, but also those traveling in cars. I had a friend killed on a bicycle and another disabled for life who was on a motorcycle. The point is highways are dangerous.

Also, every American today has a paper trail from the time we were born (birth certificate), (social security number), (state I.D.), ad nausea. When we seek employment, cash a check, or even buy a beer we must show an I.D.

If we present our I.D. to potential employers, bank tellers, or cashiers our I.D. then what is the problem with showing a police officer our I.D. ?

I see this individual only trying to make a point about police crimes and brutality and tagging ‘Veteran’ to get noticed.

    • Common Sense

Why do so many people these days want to provoke Cops?

The truth may well be – with camera in hand this, so called self proclaiming ‘Vet’ wanted a confrontation!

When you pick a fight, that’s usually what you get!

      • Tonto

It seems to me that the question is more about who is provoking whom. We have a dweeb cop around here that loves to pull people over for CS. It amazes me that no one has slapped the snot out of him. I have had cops tell me flat out that some guys become cops just to push people around. And hey, the law is the law….for everybody. The guy on the bike will teach the cops around his area a lesson they all need….the Constitution trumps any BS authority they have stressed their limited intelligence to imagine. The Constitution is the basis of law…and that includes illegal laws, statutes and rules anywhere in the USA. Know the Constitution (in this case the 4th Amendment) and you win. I know, I’ve used it myself.

      • v3exceed

How you even claim to be a free citizen is beyond me. You portray all of the traits of a coward. Best not provoke anyone, just let them search your girlfriend, she might have something hidden in there.

With each incident that someone weaker than you, or with less than you gets trampled by those expected to protect the weak and the poor, YOUR society becomes less. The fact that you cannot understand this is sadder than you can imagine.

Your avatar is a lion, but you are so much less than such a noble creature. You should choose something more fitting, perhaps a worm.

      • kjat

A poster with common sense. That is hard to come by these day. You saw what I did. A man and his friends who have a problem with a certain police officer in the area. I got the impression that he used the title ‘Veteran’ just to get attention to the article. Since I’m a veteran, it caught my attention. But in the video it appeared as tho he wanted a confrontation. Whatever…I just think it is sad that people are trying to pit one against the other. I hope that his intentions aren’t to bring about discord with veterans and the police. That would be very sad.

    • porterv

There are so many of these stories that you can’t keep up with them. Jerks become cops so that they can hide behind a badge while they bully people around. That’s their job, professional bully. They hire the dumbest people they can find to fill these jobs.

    • ichabodcrane

Too many veterans give attitude and many of them become cops who do the same thing!
Vets are no longer guys to be honored!
      http://www.theusmarinesrape.com/FaceBook.html

    • Irrefutable fact: All cops are career criminals

An unlawful arrest is an assault like any other assault and can LAWFULLY be resisted like any other assault up to and including lethal force, if needed. USSC ruling (Bad Elk decision) and common sense.

We all know that if pigs are involved then lethal force will ALWAYS be necessary!

Until pigs start getting what they give this will only keep getting worse.

    • Fisherman

Rightly so too that this veteran is arrested! DONT play big boy and ask cops for their ID.
Any American that does this should be arrested.

      • -kg-

Fine. Then the one time you are confronted by a psycho playing cop, you’ll deserve being taken to a corn field and killed, since you were dumb enough not to ask for identification.

Of course, I do agree with part of it. You sometimes risk being killed either way.

        • kjat

I so not portend to know everything, but it is my understanding that police officers in every state are required to identify them self when dealing with the public. This is to protect citizens from criminals pretending to be police. They are not required to explain to a suspect why the officer is speaking to or questioning anyone. That is just a matter of courtesy. The practice of demanding ID’s from civilians is a practice that is used by totalitarian regimes. It is done more and more by many police departments. This is due to the attitude of superiority of our current administration being filtered down to local level policing. Our president and many others in Washington DC, are exhibiting royal type personalities and treating the rest of us as surfs. This is a dangerous tend as it can only lead to totalitarian rule and misery to its populous. The people can and must end this slide towards dictatorial rule by letting current office holders that this is not acceptable and replacing those who resit the protection guaranteed by our Constitution.

    • Болеслава

If everyone was required to lick a cops butt immediatley when stopped, none of this back chat would occur. [sarcasm]

      • Болеслава

This would require every cop to drop his pants and bend over before the interrogation can begin. This would be the correct proceedure. This would have more chance of sucess if the police employed only female officers.
think about it. But not for too long.
