Got to agree with Moriyah on ‘safest survivable place in the U.S.’, it would have to be somewhere between Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas. No shakers, no floods, no gun control nuts, no radiation, no government tyranny (beyond what is currently unavoidable). I live west of there myself, but the worst two problems they always have in that area are terrible wind storms (and the occassional associated winter blizzard) and summer droughts/heat. If someone had some cash and wanted to build a nice ‘survivability home’, that’s the place to put it. Front end loader with trencher, dig it partially sub-surface, pour some concrete foundations and berm walls, put a few Conex boxes in-ground, little welding, little general carpentry, and voila – super survival shelter home on your own property for less than $100k.

Now, being as this is pretty harsh desert in most of that area between those two towns, and wells are DEEP if you dig them, and jobs are few and far between everywhere (though trucking, oil work, and ranching are strong suits in that area), you have a few slim ‘career choices’ if you aren’t retired or independently wealthy, and want to ‘bug out permanently there’.

Me? I’ve lived in the region most of my life – love the desert, and knowing that any city fool that comes near my place will end up being just another of ‘pharaoh’s mummies’ in a few days of trying to survive here is that added layer of security I like having. No ‘raider’ from most any ‘urban area’ is going to camp outside my place and think he’s going to ‘outlast’ me – between the wind, the sun, and the parched dryness, I give him 3-4 days before he’s feeding the beetles.
