USS Ronald Reagan Sailors Claiming Radiation Health Problems: US Congress Takes Notice and Acts

Chalk-up another victory for so-called “alternative media.” Alternative media was responsible for the “viral” spread of the story about USS Ronald Reagan sailors impacted by Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant radiation. It took some time for the mainstream media to get past their knee-jerk “it’s all conspiracy theory” indifference. But they joined the rising tide of reportage, particularly after TND and other publishers outed the mainstream for falling down on their job.

Now, TND has discovered deep within the amended explanation of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2014 a material statement and instructions dedicated to radiation research, along with significant appropriations to be made available to examine the USS Ronald Reagan incident:

RADIATION EXPOSURE

Recent reports of sailors who have developed cancer and other health conditions linked to radiation exposure after serving on the USS Ronald Reagan during Operation Tomodachi, which provided humanitarian assistance following the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan in March 2011, are disconcerting. The Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) is directed to submit a report to the congressional defense committees not later than April 15, 2014, on the number of sailors serving on the USS Ronald Reagan during Operation Tomodachi who were potentially exposed to increased levels of radiation during the humanitarian mission. The report should include a complete inventory of any adverse medical conditions experienced by these sailors since Operation Tomodachi, as well as a description of the actions taken before, during, and after the mission to ensure the safety of sailors from nuclear radiation. It should also include a breakdown of the number of sailors who participated in Operation Tomodachi who are still Navy servicemembers, including reserve component, as well as the number of sailors who have since separated.

The Secretary of the Navy is directed to take all necessary steps to ensure that any health effects resulting from this humanitarian mission are fully addressed. The agreement includes $200,000,000 for the peer-reviewed medical research program, $100,000,000 for the joint warfighter medical research program, and $25,000,000 for the peer-reviewed cancer research program. A portion of these funds should be utilized, if necessary, to carry out additional research on the health effects of radiation exposure. Further, the Secretary of the Navy is directed to report to the congressional defense committees on any research efforts related to radiation exposure, not later than 30 days after additional funds are provided to new or existing research efforts. Credit where credit is due, Libbe HaLevy interviewed attorney Charles Bonner for Nuclear Hot Seat podcast show #129. Mr. Bonner is one of the attorneys representing the crew members. Thereafter, the story went viral and was responsible for spotlighting the USS Ronald Reagan sailors’ plight.

Libbe HaLevy aired an update interview with Mr. Bonner on February 11, 2014. Don’t miss it. Click here to listen.

It appears that neither the mainstream nor alternative media has reported on the amended explanation of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2014. Share this story. Make it go viral. It will help underscore the importance of studying the impacts of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster, and stimulate more mainstream media coverage. Instructions and appropriations from Congress are among the sort of “official actions” upon which the mainstream media tends to prefer to hang their reportage hat.

We’ve all been “contaminated” ever since the first atom bomb test was conducted signaling the dawn of the atomic age. WE ALL SHOULD BE COMPENSATED!
