Alfonso Cuaron: First Mexican, Latin American to Win Oscar for Directing
Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron won an Oscar for Best Director for his movie ‘Gravity.’ Duran becomes the first Mexican and Latin American to win an Oscar for directing.
This was Cuaron’s third Oscar nomination and the third time was the charm.
The movie was nominated for 7 Oscars and won for Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Cinematography, Film Editing (won by Cuaron), Original Score, and Best Director.
‘Gravity’ is the science fiction thriller starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. Bullock plays a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission with Clooney’s character, Dr. Ryan Stone. Cuaron brilliantly shows how a routine spacewalk turns treacherous when it leaves Clooney and Bullock’s characters tethered to each other spiraling out into the blackness of space.
Cuaron won the 2013 Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film Award for “Gravity,” the same category in which he won a Golden Globe.
The 52-year-old director was born in Mexico City and studied film at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos. He has directed other big-budget films including “Children of Men and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
Cuaron is best known in his native Mexico for ‘Tu Mama Tambien’ where he wrote, directed, edited, and produced. The 2003 movie would also go on to collect nominations for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes, a Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack Album, and screenplay nominations at the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards.
In his acceptance speech, Cuaron thanks his family in Spanish and many of the Mexican directors he worked in Mexico.
The other Mexican to win big tonight was Lupita Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The 31-year-old actress was born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents. She is named after ‘La Virgen de Guadalupe.’ Nyong’o’s parents were working in Mexico City when Lupita was born; she maintains dual citizenship in Kenya and Mexico.
