Despite the relentless protests of Kiev, and of course the G7 group of world’s most indebted nations, in the past two weeks Vladimir Putin once again succeeded in outplaying the west and annexed the Crimea peninsula without firing a single shot (granted there is still potential for material situational deterioration, one which would involve military participation by NATO whose outcome is not exactly clear). The market has “priced in” as much, with prevailing consensus now dictating that Russia will preserve its foothold in the Crimea however without additional attempts for annexation: certainly Poland is hoping and praying as much.

However, as the following photos taken on the Russian side of East Ukraine, next to Belgorod, the Russian airborne troops (“VDV”) are now piling up, only not in Crimea, which needs no further Russian military presence, but ostensibly to prepare for the next part of the annexation: that of Russian-speaking east Ukraine.

Ukraine warns of ‘full scale’ invasion as Russia moves its artillery close to the border – Bandit coup security chief says Russia’s troops could overrun Kiev within 3 hours ~ link ~ Since the early 19th Century the Russians have always believed in mass artillery fire.  In fact, current strategy is to ‘sterilize’ the route of advance with tubed and tubeless (rocket) artillery fire.  Two of the photos with this article describe armored mechanized 152mm artillery pieces as tanks, which they are not.  Stirling

Ukraine Coup PM cancels speech at National Press Club in Washington ~ link ~ As is widely known, Ukraine’s acting post-coup PM Arseniy Yatsenuk is currently in the US and holding heating talks with president Obama on just how to define the “costs” to Russia should Putin conclude his annexation of the Crimea this weekend in a way that the Russian leader will finally pay attention. As was less known, after his meeting, at 8 pm tonight, the PM was supposed to hold a press conference at the National Press Club.

Ukraine and EU to sign deal next week says Merkel ~ link ~ Merkel made the remarks in a joint conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Wednesday in the Polish capital Warsaw.

“We agreed to sign the political part of the association agreement with Ukraine as soon as possible, probably at the next EU summit,” scheduled for March 20-21, said Merkel.

Tusk added that both he and Merkel believe that signing the deal “with Ukraine as soon as possible would be beneficial.”

G7 warns Russia on ‘annexing’ the Crimea – with video and photos ~ link ~ Meanwhile, Ukraine’s national security chief has warned of a major Russian military build-up on Ukraine’s borders.

Andriy Parubiy said Moscow had not withdrawn its troops after carrying out military exercises near Ukraine’s eastern and southern frontiers last month. 

Israel announces new Golan Heights settlement plan – with video ~ link ~ Israeli authorities said that over the next four years, they would build some 400 new settlements in the Golan Heights for 23,000 settlers.

Tel Aviv has also offered job opportunities and tax credits for settlers in a move aimed at expanding its settlement activities in occupied territories.

The Israeli regime captured the Golan from Syria in 1967, during the Six-Day War of 1967, when it also took control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Tel Aviv annexed the Golan Heights in 1981.

The move was not recognized by the international community. This is while, the United Nations regards the Golan Heights as an occupied territory.

Analysts and activists say Israel is taking advantage of the current situation in Syria to go ahead with more settlement projects.

Search for plane expands as third possible sighting adds to confusion ~ link ~ The international hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 expanded to cover 27,000 square nautical miles on Wednesday as a third potential last sighting added to the confusion over its movements.

India became the 12th country to say it would join the search, indicating how far north the operation had been extended.

Anti-government protesters to hold fresh rally in Caracas ~ link ~ Students and opponents of the Venezuelan government are set to hold a fresh rally in the capital Caracas to mark a month of protests in the South American country.

The new rally, called by the opposition, is planned to take place in Caracas on Wednesday in commemoration of the beginning of the country’s violent pro- and anti-government demonstrations in February 12.

With 2 million members, it could easily get the 1 million signatures the EU requires to lodge a citizens’ appeal. But the Lisbon Treaty also says the 1 million people must come from at least seven EU countries.

Why 2014 is beginning to look a lot like 2008 ~ link ~ For example, the increasing signs of stress in the global financial system, from periphery currencies crashing to China’s shadow banking bailouts to the constant flow of official assurances that all is well and whatever situations aren’t well are on the mend.

The long lists of visible stress in the global financial system and the almost laughably hollow assurances that there are no bubbles, everything is under control, etc. etc. etc.  certainly remind me of the late-2007-early 2008 period when the subprime mortgage meltdown was already visible and officialdom from Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan on down were mounting the bully pulpit at every opportunity to declare that there was no bubble in housing and the system was easily able to handle little things like defaulting mortgages.
 

UK Labour Party rules out EU referendum without new treaty ~ link ~  UK Labour leader Ed Miliband is to rule out an in/out referendum on EU membership before 2020 unless a new EU treaty proposal bids to transfer more power to Brussels.
The promise will be part of a speech on Wednesday (12 March) by the Labour leader, whose party holds a slight poll lead over the governing Conservatives.
