Venezuelan Government Arrests Security Forces for Violence Against Protesters
Authorities are holding 14 members of the security forces on charges of violating human rights amid weeks of anti-government protests blamed for more than a score of deaths, the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office said Tuesday.
The group includes six officials from the Sebin intelligence agency, four officers of the PNB national police force, three municipal policemen and an army sergeant, the AG’s office said in a statement.
All 14 are being held without bail at the request of the AG’s office, which described the detainees as “involved in violations of basic rights during the acts of violence that recently occurred in the country.”
Last week, an NGO provided to the authorities reports of 42 cases of alleged abuses by security forces.
Those accusations are now under investigation, according to the national ombudswoman, Gabriela Ramirez.
Attorney General Luisa Ortega said that all officials who are found to be responsible for human rights violations will be punished.
Venezuela for the past month has been experiencing a wave of protests against the government of Nicolas Maduro that have resulted in more than 20 deaths, hundreds of people injured and more than 1,000 arrests.
The fatalities include both opponents and supporters of the government.
