Comedian Dave Griffiths On Being A Cnut

The fearsome Viking King of England Cnut the Great stood on the seashore and ordered the waves not to advance to prove to his groveling courtiers that he was not a God.   The comedian Dave Griffiths has cost the clothing company French Connection about three million pounds in lost revenue, and thousands in legal fees.  He’s got them in hot water with Ford, Pepsi & Kentucky Fried Chicken to name a few. There were piles of unsold garments because of Dave Griffiths.  In short, he’s a painful thorn in the side of this huge company, and he isn’t going to go away any time soon.

“I hate bullies,” said Dave, when I ‘phoned him about his French Connection battle.  “I hate to see anyone bullied.  I always stood up for people as a kid, even if I might get my face smashed in,”

NN: So this has been going on for about 10 years, and now you’re making a documentary about it?  They must have really got on your nerves!

DG: “We’re making this documentary which French Connection would probably rather we didn’t.  Part of the crowdfunding campaign is to cover the legal fees this is going to run up.  They would probably rather I just shut up and went away,”

NN:  “And are you going to do that?”

DG: “Not now, no.  If they hadn’t tried to intimidate me into shutting down then yeah, I would have.  This isn’t about T-shirts or trademarks or funny swear words.  It’s about not being pushed around by big companies that think they are above the law,”
